I bought the fucker, I think I've listened to it all the way through once, I don't even know where it is now.

I bought every Clash album, none of them are great.
London Calling certainly is ...

You think Rudie Can't Fail is great?
Best track on the album is Spanish Bombs, like all Clash albums it's two or three good tracks and a load of filler.

I'd say that more than 50% of the (double) album is top quality/killer. There are a couple of tracks I gloss over when listening, but nothing that offends. And the best track is a cover, Brand New Cadillac.

Your taste is different to mine, though I doubt if I've listened to the whole album in the last 30 years.

Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: Thu Jul 28, 2022 4:51 pm I think we need to first decide what constitutes a UK band, then what makes them the best.

For me a band has to be a group of people that play all the instruments and sing all the lyrics on the songs they perform.

UK means all the members have to be UK citizens, otherwise they're foreign or multi-national. YES, IDEALLY!A homegrown and self-performing IYSWIM??

Best means I have to like the band and the music they perform.
What's the minimum number to make a group, Ed Sheeran in a group of 1?
Would a duet count? Would it still count if they have Scottish accents? HAT IS OKAY, which is why Simple Minds can be up there in the list! =Just A Brilliant band!!
Irish?? No notreally, hence U2 ruled out by tours tulty much as I like them though!! There iis a heavy bias towards heavy rock in most people' suggestions, like I. Maide, Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin etc. Oly the last of these are eal candidates surely? Based on popularity and therefore record sales. Have any oer heavy groupdsmade an album asspcial as LX IV?? I think not!! Crtainly Not ?Deep Purple in rock nr Paranoid atc., etc and Steps FFS??

For me, of those Zeppelin have the Best Caalai

No, Showaddywaddy rarely got into the top 40.

I used to buy loads of albums, now I just use Google Music, but I've come to the conclusion that most bands can create 2 or 3 good tracks, I used to think I liked Hawkwind, but most of it is crap, I like 3 Hawkwind tracks, I've got every original Clash album (all 6 of them) and most of it is drivel, IMO the best Clash album is Give Em Enough Rope, but they were never a great band, they were created by Bernie Rhodes to compete with the Sex Pistols.

That'd be the original incarnation with Wilko Johnson and Lee Brilleaux, I presume? If so, agree totally. Saw them back in 1975 and they were immense. And to say they only had 3 good tracks is nonsense of the highest order..

I'm not keen on Dr Feel good with Wilko Johnson, he's a poor guitarist and desperately wants to be the centre of attention.

My 3 tracks of theirs would be Milk and Alcohol, Down to the Doctors and that's it, can't think of a third, I've got the recent compilation album and those are IMO the only tracks worth listening to, but I really like those 2 tracks and have since I first heard them.

We obviously operate on two different branches of the same tree. As far as I was concerned, when Wilko left I lost some interest in the band. I really don't understand how you can say that Wilko's a poor guitarist. He's not your average 5 minute solo kinda guy but the way he combines rhythm and lead and the renown in which he is generally held, don't speak of a poor guitarist to me . Different, yes and ploughing a furrow that not many else do, but that does not make him poor.

I've seen him 3 times since his operation for what was thought to be a fatal stomach tumour/growth and he's been excellent every time. I also saw him a couple of times when he was part of the Blockheads and there was no desperate seeking of attention. It's just a performance thing - he's an entertainer and that's what he does. Off stage he's quite shy and a definite introvert.

Different people like different things, it's great, if everyone felt the same about everything the world would be dull. I'm fussy with music, I either like or loathe songs, I'm not really that fussed about the people playing the music, they're usually egotistical, but I think you have to be to get up in front of people and perform.

BTW one of the best bands I've seen live was Bad Manners, must have been in 1989 at the Pink Toothbrush in Rayleigh, I don't think I've specifically listened to any of their music before or since, but it was a great night out.

In terms of live bands, the best live 'UK' band I've seen was probably Ian Dury and the Blockheads, easily as good as the Rolling Stones in their pomp. Of non-UK bands, Little Feat in the mid 70s and Fat Freddy's Drop about ten years ago were absolutely sublime.

Love James. They're playing the Victorius at the end of August.

Very tempted, as there's a few good bands on. The Gremlinette likes Paolo Nutini who's on on the Friday....
