I've had it for seven years and have commuted, done week end trips on it, tracked it, played on it, did IAM days on it... I've got too much of an attachment to it that I don't have with any other bike. It may not be the best at anything but I'd massively regret ever selling it, worth way more than the 3-4k I'd get for it.

I was talking about it with Siobhan last night when I got back and she was absolutely adamant that I should definitely not sell it. Can't argue with that.

Must say wish I could've justified keeping the 690. I could buy another, but not like mine. 1 owner serviced and looked after properly from day 1.

Saying that I noticed mine was MOT'd the other day. I've been looking out for it up for sale since Jan and it's not appeared on Ebay, dealer, bike trader, gumtree etc. Then the MOT run out as well (early May). Was finally MOT'd on the 1 July but still no sale ad? Dunno why I care, but I do.

She remembers how irritated (irritating) I was when I sold my 929 and failed to find anything comparable until I bought this one.

I think that I'll return it to the road. It looked good in road trim.

Isn't that why we marry them, my wife is happy with the four bikes in the garage and the two sheds full of parts, it doesn't matter to her that I only use one of them and the other 3 are expensive ornaments.

Indeed - in my case it helps that my missus rides too. We've got 5 in the garage just now, should be going down to 4 when we sell her 125 but she's now a bit reluctant to move it on because she's emotionally attached to it.

My next project for the kawasaki is to ditch the original clocks as they're terrible.

I have no idea if it'll run without them so that's the first stop I guess.

Then I need to work out how to get signals out for low oil, fuel, the engine light to leds if that's possible but the most important is a big easy to read tacho.

ETA, having watched some videos it transpires that I have no backlight which is why it's so difficult to read so I'll investigate that.

Took the dash apart last night and the backlight does work, it's just a very dim orange colour. I spoke to a guy selling upgrade kits on ebay and have order a set of surface mount LEDs in white which should increase the contrast. It was only 15 quid so cheaper than binning the whole lot and starting again. Will report on how that goes.

I also unplugged the whole dash and the bike kept running so I'm pretty sure that I can simply replace the whole lot with a new tacho and some idiot lights. The only one that would be problematic would be the temperature but putting in an inline sensor and gauge would be relatively trivial.

Yup, the clocks really are next to useless on these, same as on my old ZX10 although in all honesty not being able to see the rev counter hasn't bothered me on them as they have a shift light, which TBH aside from the fuel light is the only thing in the display I use.
I will watch this thread with interest - I might copy you if it isn't too involved and looks neat :) :thumbup:

The packet of leds arrived and it says that they're for a zx-10 too. My life the leds are small though. I'll do the job at the weekend and report back.

First step is to take the clocks off and take the case off (I don't know why some of these pictures are upside down)...

Then separate the two boards...

Then lever flat the little black tabs to remove the led box and remove the box. Be really careful with this, don't drop it or be tempted to take the plastic bit out to see what's in there, it'll stop working if you do. Place it face down on something soft out of the way.

The little white squares on the board are the surface mount leds. The ring around the outside and the two at the top illuminate the rev counter and the six in the middle the speedo...

You have to heat the solder on the pads under the leds from the ends of the led and prise the square away with either tweezers or small pliers. This shows the first one removed. Use a solder remover suction thing or braid to remove the solder from the pads or soldering the new leds in place will be much more difficult.

Place the led in place in the right orientation (you get instructions) and heat the pads sticking out from the led and apply solder. If you apply too much heat the led will melt and won't work. Here's the first one done and you can see how much brighter they are.

Here's all the rev counter ones done. I didn't bother doing the speedo ones as I stick tape over it anyway. The orange led at the top of the board is the shift light.

I then replaced the shift light led with a bright one the guy sent me when I asked his advice on making this brighter...

This is the rebuilt clocks with the brighter outside ring and the dimmer speedo. You'd replace them all for a road bike.

If you're going to do this job buy the kit from the ebay link I posted above. The advice I got and the instructions were superb.

No worries, you’re welcome. If you get the kit from the same guy I did then ask him if he’ll supply you with the same Red shift led as he sent me. Let him know that it was the larger of the two he sent me. My id on eBay is dernian so you can let him know what you’re talking about.

Lead low temperature solder and a fine tip iron running at a high a temperature as it would go, about 400 I think. I wanted to flow the solder as quickly as I could.

One thing I should have said… when you’re rebuilding the clocks and bending the tabs back, push the metal box against the board so that they’re fully through before bending them. The contact between the board and the control edge of the lcd panel is just a contact fit held by the pressure you get when those tabs are bent. You’ll see what I mean when you do it.

In daylight the effect is less pronounced but still better.

Did a track day on Monday and really liked the way the bike handled at Bedford. Was just getting used to it and it started to misfire. I’ve put new plugs in and it’s better but the misfire is still there so I’ve ordered a coil to narrow down the problem. I’d rather buy one coil and if that fixes the issue then order another spare for when the next one goes than order four cheap ones or order four for 240 quid. Fitted coils all measure 1.7ohms so none the wiser there.
