Been out on it this morning, the new shock is fantastic, rather than skipping off bumps, the suspension now does what it should, no more wheel spin and the traction control cutting in on a bumpy road - probably the best improvement I've ever made to a bike, it shows what a budget shock the original is, over sprung and under damped.
The bike has gone from feeling like a powerful, smooth 1980s bike to feeling like an upright 2002 GSXR 750, the YSS shock is easily as good as the shocks on the top end sports bikes I had 20 years ago.
Backed off one click of low speed compression damping because it was a little firm for me.

I've noticed that somehow I've managed to put the shock bolts back in round the wrong way, the top shock bolt is now 6mm too long and the bottom 6mm short, it's not an issue because the nut on the bottom bolt is all the way in and there's a small amount of thread through the nut, but I've ordered a new bottom bolt and I'll replace it, I won't change the top one because too long isn't a problem, and more to the point, it's an arse to get to.
I'm mildly annoyed with myself for doing this because I laid the bolts out carefully when I took them out.

The forks always felt a lot higher quality than the standard rear shock, I think they're cartridge forks but they're not adjustable, so I don't know for sure.

Longer ride on bumpy roads out to Orford this evening, the rear shock is very good, I can feel that the bumps are there, but the rear wheel is staying in contact with the road all the time now. I might need a click more rebound damping and maybe one less high speed compression damping, but I need to ride it some more to be sure.

I've not updated this thread for ages, I've now done nearly 5000 miles on it, still really like the bike, still not worrying the edge of the tyres, it's got a big service soon.

Booked it in or it's 15000 mile service - the soonest the local Suzuki dealer can do it is October 24th, which isn't a problem for me as the oil was changed 5000 miles ago (it's 7500 mile recommended oil change intervals) and the valve clearances aren't tight, if they do go tight between now and then I'll stop using it, I'll know if they're tight because it will become hard to start when it's hot.

After 40 years of riding motorcycles without ear plugs my hearing is far from sensitive, and if I had Xray vision I'd find something better to look at

My 10R had 34k on before valve clearances were checked and they were all in spec. If you are regular with oil changes all should be good for miles yet.
I'm past 15k on mine now and I debated whether to let them do a dealer service,but I'll probably not bother. I dump the oil and filter every 4k and aside from tweaking the head bearings,that's been it.

It's still under warranty for another 6 months so I'm going to keep the service schedule up till at least then, it'll be another 15000 miles before they need checking again, so that's about 3 years use for me.
My car has shim under bucket valves, the first check was supposed to happen at 80000 miles, I haven't bothered as if any needed changed it would probably cost more than a replacement engine.

It's in for 15000 mile service today, pick it up tomorrow morning, I also think it may have a slow puncture in the rear tyre, it felt a bit squirrely when I rode it to the dealers on Saturday.
