Trackdays, check your leathers with back-protector

Post by weeksy »

Just for the people planning on riding this year on track (including Pembrey).

This below for example is from MSV Trackdays
Wearing a back protector makes sense. Up until now we have always 'strongly recommended' riders to wear one. From 2022 this has been upgraded to being compulsory. When lining up for your sighting laps the pitlane marshals will do their visual checks (for wristbands etc) and give you a friendly pat on the back which may be accompanied with a prod or two to see if you are ticklish. The back protector should be full length to cover at least the majority of your spine. The back protector can be integrated or separate. The back protector needs to be designed and fit for that purpose.
I'm not seeing anything on No Limits website... but you never know.

I had a go with my leathers today and they're shall we say, "a bit snug" once i shoehorn in a back-protector. So you may want to check yours just to ensure you can get into them :)

If anyone's leathers have shrunk, can the strap on (oo-err) type be worn over leathers, or do they still rely on the leathers to keep them in place?

I've got rst leathers with standard back protector built in and those are fine. 👍

I've always worn a back protector on track days, I don't get why people don't want to, they restrict movement a bit but it doesn't effect riding a bike.

It's an interesting point, I've never understood why body armour is worn under leathers rather than on top.

Certainly used to be worn on top in motocross for a while but I imagine on tarmac it's the risk of straps failing that makes it a bad idea.

Soft / D30 type armour would be more susceptible to damage if worn outside or clothing which may reduce its effectiveness over time, and I imagine rigid armour would prolong slide times and increase the risk of injury if it got caught whilst already having a bade day

The reason you wear protection under leathers is that leather suits are designed to slide over tarmac, letting friction slow you down. If you introduce something that can 'bite' into the tarmac, then you increase the risk of ragdolling (tm) and that means broken bones usually.

Coz it will come off when tumbling and sliding down the track.

If it's soft stuff, it would probably abrade quickly. But many back protectors have a hard shell or plates.

Like MX armour over pullovers.
