Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
What's all this guff about sharing food in restaurants? It seems there's a growing level of baloney about it being 'right' to share what you order and rude/unfriendly not to.
It's not rocket science. I'll order what I want to eat and I'll eat it. Happy for everyone else at the table to do the same.
(Obvs doesn't apply to anything that needs to be shared out to serve it up).

I guess that depends who you eat with. I've never ever seen this.Count Steer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 7:40 am What's all this guff about sharing food in restaurants? It seems there's a growing level of baloney about it being 'right' to share what you order and rude/unfriendly not to.

It's definitely 'a thing' with some. (This was set off by something in the 'paper' today - 'they were v friendly and shared all their dishes'. Also, out with wife and her friend who thinks we should order things we all (ie she) wants to sample. Err, no.weeksy wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 7:43 amI guess that depends who you eat with. If it's me and the missus we might say 'Oh, this is good, have a whatever' as the other might like to order it next time we're there, or she'll say she's full so I'll polish something off but that's as far as it goes.

We've always shared. Sometimes we both fancy 2 things, so we go half n half.Count Steer wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 7:40 am What's all this guff about sharing food in restaurants? It seems there's a growing level of baloney about it being 'right' to share what you order and rude/unfriendly not to.

Also Tapas here is all about sharing.
And if we're a but stuffed, we'll share a pudding.

Tapas is tapas - it's not sharing food that's been served on your plate.Yorick wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 8:10 amWe've always shared. Sharing food with someone you share a bed with isn't quite what I'm talking about.

It sounds terrible, I'll share with my wife occasionally but when we're eating out we usually pick something the other one can't stand as we wouldn't cook it at home.
No way am I sharing just to appease someone with FOMO.

Basically Spanish fast food. Half size is ration. Quarter size is tapa..
So you get a few smaller dishes.

Depends where you are tbh
In London, it's 4 olives for £12
In Spain it's a plate of olives for 50 cent

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
Didn't a lot of Spanish bars start off offering free nibbles/tapas (often salty things) to encourage people to use that bar and drink a little more because the money was made on drinks?
It's another thing that didn't translate well when copied in the UK. People go for a tapas 'meal' and just eat loads of different things - that don't necessarily go together if you stuck them all on a plate - then end up paying more than for a typical meal. Odd, it works really well for dim sum but that's often when every dish is one price (was often £1 in the olden days) rather than £12 for 3 prawns.

And in the US/Canada don't make the mistake of ordering 5 or 6 tapas to share between 2. They are humungous!

Re: Insignificant/ Significant things that BYP or just wind you up a little
Probably only happens in small places now, if at all. ie in villages with a couple of competing bars. There was also some story (possibly apocryphal) that the little plates were the right size to sit on top of your glass to keep flies? dust? out of your drink.Yorick wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 10:13 amI've heard about that on the mainland but never seen it here.Count Steer wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 9:22 amDidn't a lot of Spanish bars start off offering free nibbles/tapas (often salty things) to encourage people to use that bar and drink a little more because the money was made on drinks?
