Yup, that is the one. No movement. Going to soak it with PlusGas and try again. Ordered more bearings. Got 10% off, so worth it, pays for the delivery. M14, typo error.

I was gonna say...you can get M15s, but they're gonna be a damned sight rarer than M14s!

Bother! The outer part of the linkage sleeve in the swingarm has sheared, not shifting at all. The bearings upper and lower on the link are completely shot, so I've got new ones winging their way to me, but now I am stuck. I've got the full subframe off and want to keep it off until I have sorted bearings as it makes it easier to access all the areas. BUT, if I have to take the swingarm out, then I have to support the bike on something to make that possible. I've not got a huge amount of room in the garage and no means of suspending the bike. I could buy a second hand swingarm, service it and ensure all the parts were properly sorted. But that is just more time/money/effort. Not a weekend job anymore. The PlusGas has not been effective I'm afraid, and I was painting it on for 4 days and letting it soak.

I'm not actually sure of what you're doing, but when things are proper stuck, its normally heat time.

Tried that. No joy at all. I've picked up a swingarm for £48 delivered with a good bearing set and draglink set on it so that will be my fix. I can replace bearings with the new ones I have as and when I need to. Annoying, but not the end of the game.

I don't have the equipment for heating things up. At least I can strip the bike right down and get a decent clean up going and all that. More than I wanted to do, but then at least it will be all sorted once I've done this. Just not going to be a quick job! With a funeral a week at the moment and much more besides, I will have to take 3 days leave to get this sorted.

I really need to do this task on my ST1050 but keep putting it off for this very reason! May just pay a garage and bite the bullet.....

Rear subframe swapped out. New swing arm has arrived but I simply do not have the time/tools energy to sort this out. Will pay the mechanic to swap out the swingarm as the replacement is in excellent condition, has very good bearings on the links and so on. Just need to find the time to get this done! Bike is roadworthy for the few miles I need to do. At least it is not an impossible job, just requires tools and something to suspend the subframe from to get the swingarm out.

This is the better swingarm. So I have been able to grease up the rollerbearings which are in excellent condition, albeit they were a tad dry now, but are fully usable. I just need to get the threaded bar out of the sleeve now.... Aaah right. So I need a vice!

I remember doing this on my T509 about 15 years ago. Probably more than that!

I ended up taking it to a random garage and paying them some nominal cash amount to do it all with presses.

Gaffer tape on the sleeve, grip and out comes the threaded bar! Sorted. Now I just need to change the swing arm out! Almost there!

Cleaned up and grease packed back into the roller bearings. I've slid the sleeves in and out to ensure it is well packed in and moving smoothly on all bearings. This should last at least a year!

1/2 inch 24" Draper Breaker Bar with the 46mm socket has done the job of loosening the nut! Used a bungee strap to lock rear brake, held front brake and slowly applied pressure. Crack and the nut shifted. I've been able to loosen it up. So will loosen the wheel nut as well and now I can borrow some of the special spindle nuts for the swingarm bolt to be removed. Getting there and it will all be worth it, unless the rear shock has blown!

It did the job rather easily. Someone is posting the special sockets to me, so sometime next week I may have a bike with a nice swingarm and good bearings fitted! At least it is getting there now and I can just enjoy doing it all step by step. I'll get that rear brake off and put the bike on the Abba Stand using the footpegs as the holding point as then I can access swing arm bolt. Will take photo's if as I do the job.

I've always used a really close but not quite the right size imperial impact socket for my rear wheel. Its meant for the ball joints on a Metro, or something like that! It was about the fifth of the cost of the correct socket.

I suppose now that I'm not a poor teenager I should buy the right tool.

Its also been about 5 years since I undid that nut, so I suspect I'll need the right tool anyway.

Rear hub and drive shaft out.

Up on the Abba Stand using the top rear footpeg holes. Stable and works fine.

Rear wheel off and that long breaker bar makes life so much easier.

Drag link is also completely blown. Rusted and even when I got the sleeve out (4 pound hammer and persuasion) the bearings were rusted through. Any by rusted through, I mean worn through whole bearing sleeve into the side of the draglink and deforming it. £25 for one off eBay with decent bearings and sleeve, yes, bargain! So will be a bit of a longer wait, but I am happy to wait for the right parts to get this right.

It was for years my dream bike and I want it to work well. As it is a budget thing, I can do as much of the labour myself as is possible and just get on with it. I must admit that I was pretty knackered after todays hard work, but it felt good to get done and I enjoyed doing it, even if it was pointless with having to buy in replacement parts... but they are in much better condition, so win win! I can replace the sleeve with the hardened one I have bought.
