Websites blocked

Post by MrLongbeard »

Why would my router / ISP suddenly block a few websites from me, they work over mobile data but are inaccessible over broadband?
This site can’t be reachedwww.airgunforum.co.uk took too long to respond.
Try:

Checking the connection
Checking the proxy and the firewall
Running Windows Network Diagnostics
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
I've reset the router
I've reset parental controls
I've changed the DNS to 1.1.1.1

Is it resolving, try pinging the website. Open a command prompt and type in Ping www.airgunforum.co.uk and press enter you should get something back like:-
Pinging airgunforum.co.uk [109.75.172.146] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 109.75.172.146: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=53

if you get reply then DNS is resolving the name so its not a DNS issue. Sometimes you may not get a reply, but if the name is resolved to an IP address then DNS is OK. You will need to investigate further.

Who is your ISP?

Sky (and maybe others) block stuff by default using a service called 'Sky Shield' I had to ask them to turn if off.

Airguns might have recently being classified as a block worthy topic.

Vodafone.
I can't see anything on their site to indicate such a service, and I can get onto airgunbbs fine.

It's also doing it for a porn website but lets me access others no problem, I mean I only looked for research purposes of course

One domain might be blocked but not another for the same subject matter, simply by the cause of someone reporting the first but not the second.

It is a blocked site if you have content / parental filtering on, but that's not the issue here.
And it appears I ain't the only one having problems, there are a couple of threads running on Voda's community page, along with mine https://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Other-b ... -p/2706252

I was more pointing out that having one air-gun domain being blocked doesn't mean all air-gun related domains will be blocked.

When I've seen ISPs block websites with a filter it shows a splash screen saying 'access to this site has been blocked', this sounds more like a technical issue. As you have tried changing your DNS settings I suspect a technical problem their end.

Your obviously doing a DNS resolution properly, its then not allowing access to the site. I would say its a Vodafone issue blocking the site. You could try a Trace Route to see where you time out.

From a command prompt type in:-

tracert www.airgunforum.co.uk

Tracing route to airgunforum.co.uk [109.75.172.146]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms bthub [192.168.1.254]
2 4 ms 4 ms 4 ms 172.16.18.143
3 * * * Request timed out.
4 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms 31.55.186.184
5 12 ms 13 ms 14 ms core4-hu0-7-0-8.faraday.ukcore.bt.net [213.121.192.60]
6 12 ms 13 ms 13 ms peer3-et7-0-7.redbus.ukcore.bt.net [194.72.16.94]
7 13 ms 13 ms 13 ms ge-0-1.linx.lon.nodefour.net [195.66.224.135]
8 15 ms 15 ms 17 ms mx02-xe0.0.1-nht.dc4.nodefour.net [109.234.203.245]
9 15 ms 18 ms 15 ms 77.111.212.79
10 18 ms 18 ms 18 ms mx01-xe2.0.2-wkf.dc3.nodefour.net [77.111.212.13]
11 19 ms 18 ms 18 ms 77.111.217.13
12 18 ms 18 ms 18 ms agfuk.airgunforum.co.uk [109.75.172.146]

Trace complete.

This will tell you if you are leaving the Vodafone network to get to the website or if you are getting blocked on their network

Been there, done that as detailed https://forum.vodafone.co.uk/t5/Other-b ... -p/2706252

It's not a block based on content settings, the threads on their forum are showing failures to connect to Birmingham uni, sewing sites, bbc iplayer, gooutdoors, EA games etc etc.

It's a screw up on their routing whilst trying to go through some service routers that they've recently bought up, current work around by them is to issue fixed IP addresses outside of a range that are having problems.
