Mind you, it is bitingly cold so sitting at home with the wood burner on.
The ones round Carlisle have had about another three feet added onto the height after the 2015 floods.
Not really an issue for me as I'm higher than the flood area but I'm sure the Warwick road residents are happier about the extra height.
To be fair, all over the fells they've planted a mass of trees to lessen the flooding but there's still a lot to do yet

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
That's the river Cuckmere flood defences that the Victorians built. They also massively straightened the river out, especially the last mile or so to the sea. It helped rid the Cuckmere valley of the meanders and flooding as well as helping eradicate the stagnant saline pools that malaria mosquitos lived in. I think there was also a pesticide campaign as well, if memory serves it was one of the last places in the country that had the disease (this is all from memory I can't find anything on line).demographic wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 6:24 pm

The EA are now not maintaining any of the defences, there was a large local outcry when this surfaced a few years ago and grudgingly they are still dredging the river mouth to stop water backing up but it has been noticeable over the last few years that the areas around Litlington and Alfriston are flooding more, I suspect as a combination of this and the weather being more stormy over winter.
I can't help thinking with global warming, allowing this to return to marsh rather than grazing land is inviting insect borne disease issues.

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
When I bought my car, the dealer said it's not Euro6 compliant or it'd be a good couple of grand more. I checked on the ULEZ checker and it said it was euro 6 compliant, but then when I checked again it said it wasn't. Checking around, I found that being a BlueTEC revised model it is, or should be, a Euro6 compliant car and not subject to the ULEZ charge, despite what TFL and the dealer said. So I contacted homologation @ Mercedes and got a letter from them to prove it's a Euro6 and have now submitted the proof to TFL and upped the value of my car to boot!

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Had a chat with someone today Not really sure why he stopped to talk, I was taking a moment/breather whilst hobbling my way home from physio, and he just stopped and started talking with me. Cool, more practice. And best of all - he asked me where I was from. Two people in two days. So, I know I do have a bit of an English accent to my French, but for some people it's not quite enough to be sure that I am English
This makes me very very happy and I take it as a HUGE compliment

All of the above, except for running and swimming!!! Waddled down the stairs, had my coffee and breakfast, saw the news and was grateful for our location and circumstances.

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Woke up way earlier than planned. So got up and got sorted (takes wayyyy too long!! LOL) and went for coffee, just to get out in the sun on the way. Had coffee, chatted with people, listened to various conversations to try and understand them.
Home via the boulangerie as planning a sausage sarnie later and wanted some nice bread for it! More chatting.
The makes me happy bit?
It's beautiful here and sunny! I met lots of lovely people and talked with some of them. It's a good day
(well - pre nurse and staple removal it's a good day!!! )

Just sat down and realised that my new Decathlon sunnies were under me.
But even though the lenses had popped out, there was no damage. Lenses popped back in easy and good as gold.
I usually break everything I touch

All of the above.
Well, not the running. Or the swimming. Or the coffee (horrible stuff).
And I'm not healthy (but I feel healthy, which is the next best thing).
Apart from that...

After my success at last year's Iron-man, I've been put forward and accepted for another camera bike gig next week. Specialist film company making a film about the races. I'll be at the sharp end again

My favourite guests have just left, great bunch of guys, plenty of banter a really good week.
One of the guests wanted his bag transported to Val D"isere as he's skiing there in a couple weeks, I said I would arrange it for him. He handed me some cash to "get it done".
He handed me €250, I've found a guy that will take the bag to Val for €25

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
My pal runs an enduro tour business, but he's not so well at the moment.
So he's asked if I will take a client out who's booked for Wednesday.
I'm really chuffed that he trusts me and respects my riding.
The customer is an experienced lad, so I'll need to choose a good route.
I'm not taking payment, but just doing it for fun

We went out for dinner on Sunday and took my Great Nephew with us. He munched through whitebait as his starter and scoffed some of my squid too! I love the way he has taken to eating fish when his parents don't!

Re: Insignificant Things That Make You Happy.
Unsure if happy or sad coming down from a Rottweiler to this fluffy little shit . He is coming to stay with us for good tonight. Poor old woman the wife cleans for cant look after him any more so asked if we could take him. We said yes if he starts to behave with the cats. He has been here for the weekends for the past month or so and is doing well. The woman had a fall at the weekend and that was the decision made in her head to finally let him go. She will get to see him as the wife will take him round when she does her house.
Anyway Meet Baillie.
