Am I allowed to boast a bit??
Am I allowed to boast a bit??
Hello Guys, and Gals of course,
You might or might not remember me as I don't come on so muh since I sold my Triumph when I sold my triumph following life-threatening injuries in a cycle-race way back on 8th August 2012! I sustained a basal skull fracture, multiple brain haemorrhages, a subdural haematoma five broken ribs and punctured lung plus the leastof my problems a broken collar bone. My super consultant neurosurgeon at Hull Infirmary, Gerry O'Reilly told my wife that I was unlikely to survive but here I am. I was in the induced coma for 11-2 days and when Gerry woke me up again he was there to ask me what I was like and whatdid I want to do in the future?
I told him I was stubborn, don't give up easily and in the future I said "All I want to do is to get back on my bike!" To my undying gratitude he did not say don't be dt man, you cannot even stand up at the moment Nope, he just said, Being stubborn helps on this ward! Plus, Well ifyou want to get back on your bike? |Then, I WILL GET YOU THERE!"
I was in the hospital until November going stir crazy in fact to gt home again but yep I was home in November. I was out cycling again by February with clubmates to keep an eye on me and in September 2013 I competed the Lincoln Sportive of 60 miles around Lincoln. So Gerry had kept his promise! I started racing again after that not my former self of course but really just setting new standards for the post-accident-me.
Also, with a lot of encouragement from my friend on here Editor, I managed to write and have published two books about my careeras a veteriary surgeon. Entitled Cows In Trees because yes I was indeed called to a cow stuck up a tall upright tree, plus the sequel, The Dog With the Head Transplant.
Both titles are explained in the respective books. I tell people that if you wish to know how a wel-trsained, well-educated professional hasbeen attacked, chased, fallen over, been puzzled, embarrassed and confused by his animal patients then please read my books! Most of my career has been the usual domestic animals: Dogs, Cats, Cattle, Horses, sheep, pigs if really had to, plus a range of more exotic animals such as a 20cm tarantula with a broken leg, a tortoise aged 40 years old with an unexpected pregnancy, the Boa Constrictor 3 metres long also unexpectedly pregnant but which demonstrated that one on my two bosses at the practice had a deep-phobia about snakes!
Sorry, BrianI have just about stopped laughing at you now!! P lus, probably my favourite patient of all-time, another tortoise, this one seen in 191and effectively with a birth-certificate! , showing it was aged 96 years old! The elderly lady owning this tortoise fished in her pocket for a scrap of paper thaw as the purchase receipt received when her grandmother had bought the tortoise for five shillings[ that's 25p kids!! ] from Covent Garden in London, and this receipt also said Baby-tortoise and had date on it, of 1895! Making the tortoise then 96 years old! I really, really hope that this tortoise herein Lincolnshire is still alive and well, which being a tortoise is still feasible!! Alas I have no details of the elderly lady or her family if she left it to her children etc when the time came? Finally I wll post in Genral about me giving this presentation to lots of bodies/organisations, the talk being Cows In Trees and Other Stories. So far I done it loads of times locally but also travelled to Wanstead in London, to Leeds, Newquay, Lancashire all just for fun! I absolutely guarantee a lot of laughter at my own misfortunes! PM me f interested? Thanks!

Re: Am I allowed to boast a bit??
I forgot to add the boasting bit! Having lost much use of my left side in the crash! I now race as a Para-yclist and in October I hit my year's objective of doing well in the National Para-Cycling \time Trrial Series and won my Para-category!
i never expected to hold a National Title in my beloved sport epecially at my current age!! I achieved 5th in the National Champioship matching my previous best placing set in 2018 in Essex, but this time it was much hillier over 18.5 miles bear Bath and Bristol.
The first Series ewvent was at Wymondham on a 9.55 miles circi=uit, also hilly and I was first MC-2, = Male- Cyclist level 2, followed by 1st again on a 12.3 miles route in Leeds on very widy day! Those two wins gave me enough points to take the Series! So that is my humble-brag, I am now a National Champ!! In the single-day championship a puncture or mechanical mishap ruins the day and your entire year but no-one is likely to have those happen every timein a Series hence I aimed for the Series in 221, not just the National itself! Trouble is, how do I top that this coming year??

Congratulations on being national champ. Any chance of spending some of the book money and competing abroad?
