Our New Pergola and Other Stuff

Just before the lockdown. we finally decided to commit to new pergola. The old one didn't have a proper roof. We just ran some meshing, to see if the shade would work. It's too hot to sit out during the day, so we needed shade. The pergola behind is beautiful and folk love it, se we got the same bloke back to build us a new one. Bob, my pal with 1299 Panegale was doing all the work, and they are pals so worked out how they could help and work round each other...
Then lock down put it all back a bit, but I was able to do some prep

First job was to take down the old Pergola. I did it mesen, and then cleaned up the walls in readiness for the new one, which we were raising by about 6"

The area by the BBQ was a bit dead, so we decided to build a bench along both walls. When lockdown partially opened, we could finally crack on...

The BBQ was shit as all the bricks were all over the place and kept falling off, so we decided to bite the bullet and rebuild it. It needed 100 new bricks and took Bob 3 days. It looks amazing in the flesh

It was so hot that week, that he sat inside the BBQ and built it from inside

Penny does quite a bit in the garden and wanted a potting shed, so Bob built her a decent size potting shed. She loves it

Next job was to knock the big window out and fit double sliding doors. And also replace the existing crappy sliding doors. We're gonna change the colour of all the doors to blue, from existing brown, so we started with these. Will cost a few bob to replace the other 5 doors and 14 sets of windows, so we'll wait till things settle down a bit.

By law, all the windows and doors in a villa must be the same colour. And can only be brown,, blue or green. Oh, and the house MUST be painted white:)

Believe it or not, the whole thing took only a day

The washing machine was in the utility room and was a noisy bugger, even though it was knew. Stone floors send noise round the villa. So the boss decided to put it outside in the solana, which is the outside drying area. So Bob built a concrete shelf for it to live under alongside the dryer (which we've never used) and the recycling bins

It's much quieter now and the washing goes straight onto the line

After all that, Barry finally got to work on the actual pergola 2 weeks ago. He's flying along and should be done this week

We paid 1.000€ extra for the posh pine, but boy was it worth it

The villa is now exactly how we want it. It cost a few bob. But why wait a few years, when we can be enjoying it now ?

He's well known on the island and we had to wait 2 months for him to be free. Every detail is perfect. I've had 3 builder mates pop round and they love it.

He says they're felting and painting tmrw. Gonna be a few days quicker than expected, so will save a few bob as they quoted in days, not money

WOW!! That all looks really amazing. Good thing to get it done while you can really enjoy it all and make the best of it. Doing a good job is so satisfying as then it is done. Hope that you get many long years of great enjoyment from that home.

Great photos, love the bbq, just surprised a Yorkshireman would spring for a washing machine when there's already a perfectly good woman in the house

It was a God send in summer and we sat out many days. But the last 2 weeks, the sun is dropping a bit and too hot to sit under the end of the pergola as the sun was shining in where we left it uncovered. The last BBQ was bit daft as we were all sat by the BBQ.

We have them every 2 weeks and the builder is busy, so I decided to cover it myself temporarily. Area of 12m2.

The local shops do 200 x 50 sheets of pine lookalike, which I stained with the same expensive stuff he used. The hardest bit was cutting all the sheets at an angle to meet the existing bit. Never done anything similar before, but trial and error taught me well. The Makita 18v circular saw did it's job well.

Now it's finished, the missus is so impressed, she says we should cover it properly and make it permanent. Proper chuffed

Hope your wood is better quality than the crap we get here!
We're about 1000 miles north of you and wood twists for fun here. Knocked up a slatted fence the other week, after a month of sun 2 areas had lifted by @ 3", and the decking which only gets sun in the afternoon assumes interesting shapes throughout the year!
