Re: Prostate examination. 😲
All joking aside, I fail to see why there is so much reluctance to have a prostate check. It takes 30 seconds, doesn't hurt and, although a little basic, can detect cancer. I have a colleague who steadfastly refuses to even talk about it (he is the most homophobic person I know, too boot. Maybe the two things are linked...)
As undignified as it may seem, I would advise everybody on here to ask for either a digital examination or PSA test if it isn't offered. Noggin, Trinity, et al excluded, of course.
Mate of mine had prostate cancer and had the choice to either have it out or die. No-brainer, really. Net result is that he's alive, but will never have to reach for a tissue after a shag, if you catch my drift. He says his missus is actually happy with that particular outcome.
Coincidence - just seen this on the BBC News : https://www.bbc.com/news/health-60390084

I'll try to stay away from falling rocks* for the next 28 days otherwise I might become prostate death statistic.

Re: Prostate examination. 😲
I had an off-the-scale PSA Score a few years back but fortunately it was -only- a urine/bladder infection and after treatment it's been fine since. I'm in the right age group for problems through and my dad had (and survived, with treatment) prostate cancer - so unsurprisingly I've had various doctors scratching around for loose change up there over the years. My old GP "Dr Mouton" had hands like a goalie, so I was dead pleased when he retired.

Re: Prostate examination. 😲
I was diagnosed with BPH about 18 or 19 years ago. I've had a few PSA tests in the last couple of years and they've all been low so I guess it's still benign.
It's an ongoing nuisance though so I'll shortly be seeing the urologist to discuss options - the pills help a bit but aren't brilliant. I now have a woman in my life so as my heart issues seem to be sorted now (although more pills for forever I guess) it's time to get the other wonky bits sorted.
Unfortunately the PSA test isn't that accurate so it's best to have at least 3 over a couple of months to get a better picture.
I think the phrase that's used to keep discussion going is "More men die with prostate cancer than from it."

Re: Prostate examination. 😲
If we're exchanging stories, my prostate and bladder have been the focus of a number of consultants over the last few years. Sometimes my piss comes out at the speed of a melting icicle in the spring sunshine. A few episodes (usually after me imbibing a number of pints and neglecting to empty the bladder - cardinal sin) have seen me in tears stood in the shower at home, after a very, very uncomfortable train journey home, warm water trying to tempt the bladder to empty at least some of its contents. Usually takes a couple of attempts as it shrinks and the muscles contract. Painful? Just a bit. I've been advised by my urologist to get some catheter tubes and learn to do it myself to save any impromptu trips to A&E, which he thinks is on the cards in the near future if I don't learn to manage it better.
There are surgical procedures to resolve the issue, but I manage with medication and ensuring I piss more than I think I need to. My first task when I enter a pub/restaurant is to clock where the bogs are and make sure I go regularly.
Joys of age.

100% this. My BDad was sure that, after he'd recovered from bowel cancer, something was wrong. The consultant kept saying that he was fine, it was just cos he was 70 and was bound to be a bit more tired etc etc etcMingtheMerciless wrote: ↑Wed Feb 16, 2022 9:37 pm
And if you think something wrong don't let the GP fob you off.
A few months later, he found lump on his neck (only cos he had a business meeting that required a tie!! He still ran quite a big business) and went back to the consultant who kind of went, oh, ummm, best check that.
He had Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. Who knows if he'd have lived longer if the consultant hadn't been so dismissive??
For us the equivalent is probably the smear test. But so many women have early very bad experiences that they put it off. Me included. I HATE going for a smear and have had about a quarter of the ones I should have done.gremlin wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 9:26 am All joking aside, I fail to see why there is so much reluctance to have a prostate check. Out here they are a bit more pushy on getting you to go and having spoken to female friends here (didn't really have that many female friends in the uk) I now have more info on why it's painful (like, excrutiating - one of the reasons I stopped going is that nurses constantly looked at me crying and just said, "oh, pull yourself together, it's only a bit uncomfortable, not actually painful". Pointing out that I don't cry in pain when it's only uncomfortable didn't seem to have any effect!!!)
Also here I can go to a midwife to get it done instead of a random nurse/ignorant fuckwit of a male french gyne! So hopefully the next won't be so back!! LOL

Re: Prostate examination. 😲
I remember Mrs. Gremlin taking Gremlinette for her first smear. She said the nurse who did it was rough and taciturn, to the point Gremlinette got all anxious causing the nurse to get more frustrated, ad infinitum.
We complained, as if every young girl has that experience they're never going to go back, unsurprisingly, when we all know that it's the sensible thing to do.

Re: Prostate examination. 😲
Several years ago, amongst my mates we had the 'three ball club'. Just two of us, his was a cyst, mine a hydrocele (feel free to Google images 'excision of ____ ', but I don't recommend it). A quick Q&A of about a dozen sat around the pub table found that only half regularly (if ever) checked their nuts for lumps. Testicular cancer is killer but, if caught early, etc.
At /\ that time I was talking to colleagues and one said "Was it a male Dr? Wouldn't want to have to get looked at by a female Dr!"
I asked whether he would usually prefer a man or woman to be examining his parts?

Over the course of it, I had numerous medicos do various examinations.MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 1:18 pmI had a female Dr ask me if I'd prefer a male Dr when I went to get my love spuds looked at personally I couldn't give a monkeys s'long as the job gets done.
One lovely lady actually complimented me. On the neat scar ...
As an aside, there were enough amusing elements to fill 5 minutes of a Carry On film. Including when the Consultant couldn't get the venetian blinds to work (needed darkness for one test, shining light through = fluid, dark = lump), so had a blanket over his head like a Victorian photographer.
I had an ultrasound done, was disappointed that I couldn't have a photo

Re: Prostate examination. 😲
All this prompted me to get off my backside and make an appointment to get a few ongoing concerns sorted. LOL.
After playing snakes and ladders with the on-line (no) booking service I completed the e-consult multi-level game which threw me out at the end saying call the medical practice (and ditched everything I'd typed in).
Call the health centre....sit listening to the message that tells me to do the e-consult thing for 30mins. Get a receptionist and repeat what I'd typed in. Someone will text me about a telephone diagnosis (got to go the full distance to get the golden key to the health centre door), sometime, probably.
If you didn't you'd I only need a blood test. Be easier to source the kit and do it myself.

Re: Prostate examination. 😲
At a BUPA wellness test a few years ago, I had a young and attractive female doctor do the whole exam thing. She was a really nice person, RAF reservist, interesting and very witty. We got along really well.
Come the exam time she did all the usual reflexes, breathing, etc, then asked if I wanted the prostate exam. No problem, said I. She told me it all felt good, then asked if, whilst I had my undercrackers down, I want her to examine my testicles for anything untoward. Just to be sure I've not missed anything in my casual fumblings in front of the telly, yes, please. Better safe than sorry.
She looked down, sort of half pointed and asked me, rather apologetically, 'Would you mind just moving your penis out of the way'.
I don't know why, but that was just the cringiest thing. I actually felt myself flushing whilst mumbling an apology. The mother of all conversation killers.
Anyhow, my nuts are all good.

As part of my private health cover, I have several annual checks.
One is the urologia which is an ultrasound of my abdomen and bollox. The finger treatment and PSA blood test. Good to know all is OK.

I used to work shifts. One guy arrived for lates, said he'd just seen the best ever daytime TV (ok, low bar).
'Richard and Judy', live check for testicular cancer. Guy naked apart from a dressing gown. Holds his todger aside, Dr checked scrotum. All clear.
Richard Madely says thank you very much to the bloke, then shook the guy's hand
