Something to think about
With regards to the new road rules about waiting for pedestrians to cross, I have this from a lady pointing out something I wouldn’t have thought of……
Can I please point out that those of us working Assistance Dogs and Guide dogs have our dogs trained to wait at kerbs until NO cars are present. Our dogs won't cross with us until cars drive on past. This new rule means drivers will stop and try to wave us across. Please be aware we won't cross the road and you will only hold us up. Best to drive on past if u see a vested working dog knowing this is more helpful to us. Thank you.

Saw a 'clarification' to an instructor from the DVSA today that - as I understood it for it was a model of clarity (not) - if you are planning to emerge from or turn into a junction and there is a pedestrian waiting to cross, you now have to give way...

...unless there is an island in the middle of the road, when you don't have to as it's now a 'crossing'.

WFT?

Anyone understand that? Why should an island make any difference?

If they are on the far side of the road, you are a minimal threat as they cross to the refuge.

Yeah thats a good point. If they're on the far side of the road they're not technically waiting to cross "your lane" IYSWIM.

But I'm with Spin in general...my first reaction is that an island crossing is even more reason for you to give way to pedestrians, not less!

That's wrong then, the new rule says 'should' so if it's dangerous to stop I'm not going to.
The island thing isn't new but previously I thought only staggered crossing islands worked like that, a standard small island won't do much for a woman with a pushchair.

I suppose they are treating it by analogy with a zebra with an island (which is treated as two separate crossing) but as you say, the standard island-with-bollard isn't much of a refuge.

But quite frankly, the same applies when they are waiting on the pavement on the other side of the road - they're far less of a threat to you than Deliveroo Boy who's blasting up the inside of the queue behind you on the main road, and expecting you to keep turning and get out of his way.

According to another DVSA 'clarification' I've just seen, the question asked was along these lines:

"what if the candidate is turning left at a green traffic signal, where pedestrians do not have a red 'do not cross' light against them? As I interpret the new rule H2, the candidate should stop and give way for a waiting pedestrian."

That was something I was thinking when out driving earlier this week. But according to the person who responded, the candidate would NOT be expected to give way "because it's a traffic signal".

Why? What's the logic for that?

I'm not sure the priority hierarchy is because they are a threat to you ;)

Nowt wrong with proceeding with caution but how is the pedestrian supposed to know that if they are waiting to cross an uncontrolled side turning then the candidate should give way in order to let the pedestrian cross, but that if the turn is on a green traffic signal then the situation is reversed - it's the pedestrian's duty to wait until the road is clear?

Tell me where it says THAT in the HC.

Something else that's been pointed up is that everyone kind of assumes that it's daylight and good visibility... I'm reminded in my FB article on the issue:

"What about at night when you can't see them cause they have dark clothes on and decide to cross in a place that is not lit. I come across them all the time in the morning and night going home from work suddenly appearing from no where."

And that reminded me that I nearly turned right into a pedestrian crossing the road dressed in dark clothes against a dark background just before Xmas - it was fortunate that the pedestrian was crossing far enough back from the main road that I had space to stop that did not leave me stranded across the opposing lane whilst he ambled to the pavement... and then there's heavy rain... and fog.

As a pedestrian, even if I now have right of way / priority, if i think a driver hasn't seen me or isn't going to yield, I'll defer to them. Not sure I'm unique in that.

As a driver, eventually you are likely to meet an "I know my rights!" pedestrian or cyclist. They might be dead by the time you're close enough to be introduced, but ... ;)
