I think relying too much on TC will make you a poorer rider.

I don't think I could switch off 26 years of riding without TC and from Saturday's experience I def don't think I'd expect to much from it.

I also think you're missing out not at least trying a MT07 lol. Especially as you can get brand new with warranty and within budget.

I'd pay a bit more and get a 21 MY mt09. Took mine out yesterday on slippy roads without drama. Yes, you do need to be right hand savvy, like any big bike, and I'm sure you are. I keep mine on engine mode 1 full power and TS 2. More help the better. The 21 has all the toys you'll ever need. Don't get a tail tidy. It's stock or mudflap.

Yeah but now we're in MT10 sort of budget or brand new 890R and out of the £7000 range he wants to stay in.

All the 1000 GSXS's are cracking value for what you are getting. That's more than I wanna spend but plenty of the old shape in range. The big question for me with them is the fact they are near as dammit 150bhp. I'm not sure I want quite that level of responsibility on the road. You have to go a bit older than the 750 for my budget but you get alloy frame/swingarm, brembo, adjustable suspension for the extra. But they are appreciably more power than the 750 and MT09. If I was after value for money and most power the GSXS 1000 would be top of the list.

That's the crux of it. With less traffic and no police/camera's I'd be fairly happy with the 1000. But in the real world 150 bhp means big speeds are (too) easily achieved and unless you're going fast you're not using a large portion of the engine's performance, so why bother having it is where I view it from. So it's less that I'm a wuss, more that I can't see the point in owning it.

I'm very much in the Weeksy camp of riding B-roads for the vast majority of my riding and the 750 or MT09 have more than enough for that. To be fair even they are a bit overkill, but I fancy the odd lairyness. For my actual needs the 690 fits 95% of my riding and I should keep it. But that's biking init you want something else now and again.

I ride shitty little roads, that's when you need the power to safely get pas that dawdling car before the next blind bend.

It's alright on my Enfield because it struggles to keep up with the cars, but the 50-70bhp bikes I've owned have always struggled with that effortless overtake.

I get the 150 bhp overkill bit, but its nice to know its there if required. The 0 -100 ish play ground is within reach of much smaller and similar times as the bigger bikes.

My concern wouldn't so much be power overkill but more down to weight. Light bikes rule.
