Apparently a 'thing' in custom/retro stuff, it seems XSR700s they like doing.

They had a few of these on the Yamaha stand at the last NEC show I went to. Quite a lot of square footage dedicated to it. a nod to the Hipster scene..

Goblin Works Garage built one for the Back Yard thing, can't remember what episode it was, but iirc they turbo'ed it, but didn't actually finish it in time.

I just googled it... and ended up looking at this 900 instead...

It's 'different'.

A few years ago riding the road(pedal) bike around Beachy Head I came across this lot doing a photo shoot. The bike was based around a Yamaha engine and was exquisite. It's not normally my cup of tea but the workmanship really shone and it looked beautiful.

Perhaps I'm just an old fart but to me a bike should be both functional and beautiful, and those are neither. They're kitsch copies of an era that never existed, destined to spend their lives in and around Shoreditch and Chelsea as lifestyle accessories.

I've seen plenty of Groms that have been done up like proper dogs dinners, mine isn't. And if you think it's not functional you're welcome to have a go on it

I'm sure the owners of those Yamahas would say the same. Its subjective innit? If the brief for functionality is pootling into the Bike Shed to get your moustache waxed, the Yams are winners

I'd love a Grom BTW

Not really, the Café Racers of the 60s were owned by the same type of people who owned LCs in the 80s and 90s, most 60s café racers were an attempt to make an old commuter bike into something sporty, these modified XSRs are more of "object'd'art" than functional motorcycles, but I think you could say that about any retro styled motorcycle.

The reason so many are XSR700 based is because Yamaha did a special promotion on ‘yard built’ and even gave donor bikes to some of the worlds best customisers. The XSR is an ideal base for customising and there’s are better examples out 5here than the ones shown ..
