Ducati break sales records as 2021 becomes most successful year in company's history

Ducati have revealed that 2021 was their best sales year on record with 59,447 motorcycles sold worldwide.

The figure is an impressive 24% up on 2020, which was heavily impacted by Coronavirus but also a massive 12% up on 2019.

The best-selling model was the Multistrada V4, a new addition to the range in 2021 with 9,957 units sold in 12 months around the world.

"2021 was a magical year for Ducati," said CEO Claudio Domenicali. "We delivered over 59,000 motorcycles, a number never achieved before in 95 years of the company's history.

"We also won the title of MotoGP Constructors' World Champion for the second consecutive year, and we started the electric era of our company with the V21L prototype, which foresees the bike that will race in the MotoE championship from 2023."

New bike sales have bounced back brilliantly so far in 2021 – although September did see a slight slowdown compared to the same month in 2020.

Sales to date have stormed to an impressive 86,431 – that is 13.4% up on the first nine months of 2020 and a healthy 3% up on a (pre-Covid) 2019.

September 2020 saw bumper sales as pent-up demand and new bike arrivals resulted in a sales boom. Even though this September saw new bike sales drop by 6% on 2020, it was still up slightly on 2019 figures, which is a more accurate comparison.

Adventure bikes, customs and scooters have seen the biggest growth with the BMW R1250GS still Britain’s best-selling big bike.

Honda’s PCX125 fought back against Yamaha’s NMax 125 in September to claim top spot in the 125cc scooter class while Triumph’s Speed Twin soared to the top of the Modern Classic category.

Sales of electric bikes continue to soar with a 97% uplift this year compared to 2020 in September.

And for the year so far, there’s been a massive 170% hike with over 4000 electric machines snapped up in 2021. By far the biggest area of growth is in 1-4Kw machines (50cc petrol equivalent) used by commuters to avoid public transport.

What's most impressive about that is 1/6 of their sales were Multi V4s. Looks like they are £16k for the base and £21k for the S. And judging from Ads they sell very very few base models.

Odd - as they never seemed to have stock of anything anywhere.
Maybe people stopped saying “ one day” and went for it?

2021 has been a record year for a lot of "fun" products, bikes included. A lot of people who haven't been able to splurge on holidays have bought bikes, cars, boats and all sorts of other "non essential" stuff. Not a surprise to see this.

I'd be interested to know where their sales where. I can't imagine they were particularly hot in Europe or North America. India? China?

Just checked... in 2020, China was their fourth biggest market with sales up 26%. Italy was the top market last year.

Doesnt surprise me.

When the DVT engined Multistrada came out in 2015 the dealers had an influx of twinspark engined bikes traded in. When the 1260 came out the DVT's were offloaded for the latest model. I fully expected the Multi V4 to sell well and notice that my local dealer now has a few low mileage 1260 engined bikes in from owners wanting the latest model ;)

I would love one of the V4's but having to lob almost 10K at it on top of my current bike just for a base model is a sting too far...... i'll wait for them to be second hand for a few years ;)

Yup, after swearing I'd never buy a new bike again, I went and contributed to this by buying a 950 MTS. No regrets so far. Lovely handling, and fairly comfortable. Looking forward to the warmer weather.

Bike Breaker might be happy, but I doubt Ohlins will make a lot of difference. :(

The one at Lings is still there, and it's still very ugly.
