Well interestingly i was looking over the bike today and you know when they say "hindsight, it's a wonderful tool" well it really may be in this case.

I've got this shock as you know, the Marzochi Bomber CR, which has not only spring rate but has high and low speed settings to play with too.

Well, i've not really touched it since buying the bike... and today i bounced on the bike and thought "woah, that's exceptionally slow"..

Click, click.... "still slow"..... click click click...."Still slow, getting better".... click click...."yeah that's more like it...." but that was 7 clicks faster of rebound.... Errrrrm that seems a LOT.

Me and the black/blue thing are very much a happy couple after today. It was faultless.

One minor issue was a bit of seatpost sag, but I think that's just cable tension and a bit of a dodgy lever I have, but will tweak that tomorrow.

Riding it was ace though in the SH ride. Both me and it are getting less shit as time passes and with luck I may even get a 'not last' place this year

Had a rattle yesterday which I think was the cassette now. It was a little wiggly when testing it like you would do with a car wheel bearing.

So took it off, out in a slightly larger spacer behind cassette and away we go. All nice now.

Whipped seatpost out of the frame and adjusted the tension on cable, all good now.

As a tester from another forum thread and a post by @millemille I've moved the bars up a bit and away from me a bit. About 10deg of rotation and 13-15mm higher... Will be out at FoD this weekend to test as it's horrible outside currently.

Deffo not. I've run much smaller frames happily. I'm not a big frame kind of guy when it comes to what I like and I sure don't feel cramped on it

I'll try the higher setup this weekend at FoD and see if I prefer or not

Cracking bit of fun today at FoD with @joebristol.
Started with the usual DH trails but then we went over to do Y2K and elephant Man. The drop mid way down Y2K is a bit fruity and made both of us wake up!
Joe then showed me some off piste on the other side of the road, was excellent and techie fun stuff at times, certainly kept me on my toes, and once lying on the floor lol.

I also got to try his bike which is I think a Transition Sentinel. 29er and very slack head angle. Felt a bit weird to ride and his wider bars also made that quite strange, but it went well, however I still think I'm a 27.5 guy.

The G170 was ace again and coped brilliantly with everything I hit. Dropped 1 click of rebound off the shock and may add a little air into the front.

Most interesting though was Joe's comments on my riding style, which didn't shock me but was quite eye opening that someone else can see the issues I know I have

More to work on

In simple terms, my flat speed is good, my tech speed is fine but my cornering is my weakness, Mostly on corner entry and seemingly in part/mostly down to my choice of lines and coming in too tight and taking the sweepers too sharply, instead of widening them out and sweeping round more.

It's something that's been prevalent in my track riding too, coming in to a turn too early. I guess it's some sort of weird safety mechanism i have and seems to have translated too into MTBing.

I hit a couple of proper tech chutes which were shall we say, a bit challenging. I also hit a decent/big drop on Y2K which was arguably outside of my comfort zone for drops lol.

We had a bit of a discussion on tyres too, i've been running a WTB Vigilante for over a year in Tough / Fast Rolling, but thoughts are that they're a bit plasticky and not exactly the grippiest out there, so this morning i've gone with a MAxxis Dissector in Maxterra compound which may give me a bit more front end feel, well maybe.

I only Strava'd 1 of my runs, mostly because as i've said i'm trying to keep it outside of my riding and enjoying rather than timing and pressuring myself. But i was 15s quicker than i've been before there so i do feel i'm hopefully getting somewhere and with a bit of luck will drag myself out of last place in a race or 2 this year lol.

Brave choice going for a dissector on the front, I tried one and it was rubbish, Maxxis managed to make a fast looking but slow rolling tyre with iffy grip. It's currently on the back of Mrs M's Levo where it is passable as a rear tyre. A mate also tried one (he's quicker round bends than me and fitter) and hated it.

Seemed OK today in all honesty... didn't experience any issues with it... Although i wasn't exactly railing corners as we were at a jump location rather than berms and twists.

Whether it'll stay long term or not i don't know.... but seems OK up to now.

I could swap them around though and try the Butcher on the front and the Dissector on the back.... maybe....

I've had a pedalling creak on and off for ages now with this. On Saturday though it was particularly bad.

I think it's wheel bearings again rather than anything else and chucked in a mates wheel to test. As always with testing it was silent lol. But always is, right till you think you've fixed it and then up it comes again.

But I've also wanted a spare rear wheel, both for myself for emergency use and for the boys next bike.

Anyway, browsing eBay a WTB i23 came up brand new, right axle, right hub and less than 5 miles away.

So collected it, set it up tubeless and it's ready to roll.

I can now investigate the other at my leisure.

The G-170 does at times get neglected due to spannering the Sworks, so today it was raining outside and i'm not due to ride until later, so jumped on the spanners/tools and got to work.

I did the main pivot bearings when i got the bike so i'm happy they're ok.. Checked the 3 bar linkage bearings which are 6802s and whilst they're not perfect, they're not terrible, so added a bit of grease to them after taking the cover off and they're OK.

Image2022-02-20_10-47-21 by Steve Weeks, on Flickr

That was the good bit though....

I then moved down to the back of the chainstay....

Now these are 3802LLUmax, the llumax designating they're better bearings and stuffed with more grease than others.... However, they're simple seized solid and don't move at all LOL. So they're out of the bike and hopefully will get swapped at Banjo Cycles, if not they'll be replaced by Ebay purchased.

Say what now !!!!
£20 a piece.

Fook knows. I regreased them and got them moving nicely with repacking them a few times. So they're currently back in the frame as I thought I may head out tomorrow as it's due to be dry. But then I saw just how bloody wet this afternoon got.

Due to them being at the back of the triangle I guess they don't move much.

Oh FFS... this is getting to be a pain in the arse.

I bought this wheel last week as a spare and while my other one was off the road.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265367873448 ... 2749.l2649
27.5 INCH REAR WHEEL WTB FREQUENCY I23 TEAM NOVATECH BOOST 148X12 MM 11/12 SPEED

When fitting the cassette i notice the last cog of the 12 speed is barely making contact with the spline/engagement bits. When i tighten the lockring it's BARELY possible to get it on without cog12 rotating. So much so that i'm wondering if it's actually not 12speed at all.
I then noticed the description says the below.

I can't find any measurements i can take with the verniers though to know, anyone have any ideas ?
The pic is of the freehub markings, but i can't find anything about them.
Novatech D952TSB-B12 10/11 Speed
Image2022-02-22_08-38-42 by Steve Weeks, on Flickr

Edit/Continue...
https://www.eshop.novatecwheels.eu/Data ... 011-02.pdf

Table below shows it's 10sp only... not 12 speed. Which is fucking useless to me and does mean i'll need to go back to the seller.

FFS.

So the guy who sold me the wheel is a dealer and was happy to refund me on the wheel. So that aspect of things is good at least. However, now i do need a new rear wheel. Mine is still creaky today after a ride over at 417flyup after an early finish at work due to a 5am start.
It's not all gears and the local friendly wheel man has done his best, but it's still creaky.
The debate now is what to go for.
I've got a lovely wheel arriving from the Evans sale, however i didn't bother buying the rear as i thought the WTB was fine, which is a nightmare as it was a bargain for the rear !!!

I may just jump on a Hope Pro4, they used to be my go-to wheels really and the only reason i don't have them currently is because they were non-boost and i flogged them cheap to @crust

Had an ace ride there. Managed to beat my best race time by 2s... Which i was more than happy with, but it still needs plenty of work of course as i'm a lifetime off the child lol.
