Ducati 1299S

Post by wull »

I don’t own this bike any more, it was the last bike I owned before the K9 and I fancy making a thread where I can put some pics on with some spiel that I can look back on and enjoy. Might be good reading, might not be, but it’s getting made

I have also been thinking a lot recently about what my next potential bike could be and I’m thinking it could be a Ducati again, albeit more than likely the V4.

I sold my S1000RR and purchased this bike in 2018 as my first Ducati and I think my second V-twin, well L-twin if being specific. At the time I was considering an even newer S1000RR but when I seen this I had to have it.

The bike had some nice little mods which set it off beautifully. Akrapovic cans, DP tail tidy, DP hugger, DP front fender as well as a few other things.

Collection day

After riding the bike home.

First impressions of the bike were good. I absolutely loved the riding position, for me it was so comfy especially for my knees which can be problematic at times, the narrow tank at the crotch helped with this so much, I’m not the most supple so this helped lots. One thing I did notice was the engine braking on the way home so I adjusted that to where I liked it, as for the suspension I left that in dynamic mode and had the main setting road. I soon changed it to race and left it at that but that day it was road.

Nice wide bars which I love, the bike just looked so good.

Did you get divorced or something, I can't think of any other reason you'd swap that for a gixer thou?

Exhaust sound

First issue that I encountered was the DP tail tidy, it had too much movement and vibration, plus the way it secured the indicators in place wasn’t ideal. One of the indicators was hanging slightly so I removed it and fitted it trying to achieve a better finished and it seemed to work.

Image

But I still wasn’t happy with the excessive vibration so ordered the Evotech tail tidy which I really like. I didn’t dislike the way the DP tail tidy looked but it just wasn’t up to the task.

Next problem was the Quickshifter, it stopped working on the upshifts. I removed it, cleaned it did everything and it just wouldn’t work. So Ducati Glasgow came and collected the bike and took it away. It was away for quite a while, they replaced the switch with a brand new updated switch and then brought it back. From that point to the time I sold it back to them it never played up again.

Next job was fitting a trickle charger connection point.

That is bloody gorgeous

I fell in love with Ducatis when a riding buddy let me ride his 916 SPS (he 'forgot' to tell me it was a limited edition :o :o ). The most extreme riding position so far on bikes for me but damn it was proper lush!!

He got a 1098s (the s was the one with the trick stuff??) but I wasn't riding with him then, so never got to have a go

He ended up selling it to the guy that bought his 916 and got the 916 back - he used to race in (I think) SuperStock or similar many years ago and just found the 1098 pointless on the road and was moving away from TD's. He was very happy to get the 916 back!!

I never thought I'd ever have a Ducati, and hadn't expected it to be a Monster!! LOL But maybe one day, if I can reach the bars, I might get a sporty version. Maybe!!

I booked a track day and decided to take the Ducati, what a bike on track especially with the downshifts, was still constantly thinking “this is the road bike” but it was still enjoyable and a very capable bike, with the Rosso 3’s fitted it was a bit iffy at times especially on the exit of Clark’s as you accelerate and transition over to the left hand kink of Hislop’s, rear end was moving around a fair bit but thoroughly enjoyable, the traction control keeping everything in line.

Another issue was the chain, had to replace it which itself caused another issue. Checked the manual, purchased the correct size chain going by the manual, fitted it as usual then realised it was two links too big…….what the fuck! Turns out the manual was completely wrong so I had to remove two links and purchase another river link to sort it out.

If I could cope with the riding position of a sportsbike these days then I'd love one, even if it was mostly to look at.
Get a naked version then :)

I'm sure I've told you about my mate with his naked V4.
He told me to take care, because if I ever try one I'll buy it.
More fool you for not trying it then.

Haha I wish! For me personally it worked because of the very narrow tank at the penis :wtf: my legs didn’t feel like they were getting spread eagled like that time at that strange bar I walked into that one time but that’s a different story, so for that reason it was great.

The sense of occasion with the bike was special, the only downside which didn’t apply to me as I do all my own work anyway is the scaremongering that Ducati dealers do with regards to working on them, it’s all relative, if you are mechanically minded then it’s fair game especially when the service costs are silly for the Desmo service, the hourly rate these places charge is ridiculous. If anything find a local mechanic/garage and have them do the work.

It munches tyres for fun but depends where you live and the kind of roads you ride on, I went through a spell of heading up towards Fort William and Oban almost every night over a two week period and it destroyed a rear tyre purely because of the long straights, especially on the section between Lix Toll and Tyndrum but since then that stretch of road has been fitted with average speed cameras. I’m not a fan of riding sections of roads like that but the wife on her K7 600 was a pain in the arse, so had to keep up.
