Gsxr 1000 K9

Post by wull »

I purchased this bike early last year and it’s predominantly turned into my daily.

Bike was standard except for the Scorpion exhaust with cat delete. This set up works perfectly for commuting, not overly loud at idle but sounds nice once opened up. I leave early for work in the morning so I can imagine I would be public enemy number 1 if it was any louder.

A few pics of the bike after being purchased.

There wasn’t many plans for the bike other than a few subtle changes, and to do some track days. No more racing after selling the race bikes so this would fill that void.

First job was to replace the standard screen. I think the aftermarket taller screen looks better but performs better, there was no wind protection whatsoever from the standard screen.

Next job was swapping out the tyres, can’t even remember what was fitted but they were crap, and done. Brand new set of Bridgestone S22’s ordered and fitted.

I then swapped out the chain and sprockets. Renthal sprockets and D.I.D chain ordered, standard size sprockets.

Looking good.

I love black bikes and I don't think Suzuki ever made a bad gixxer thou, which is some going when you think of it.

I’ve had a few now, and black being the colour of them all. I was originally on the lookout for a K5/6 but the price of them at the time was mega, the K9 was never on the agenda but at the price it made perfect sense.

Some more pics from 2020.

I can’t remember when but I had fitted GPFAX brake pads because the pads that were fitted were low, the braking performance at the time was fine and wouldn’t become a problem until the first track day. I was getting a bit confused as I remember being on track in 2020 but it wasn’t on this bike, and then I remembered.

I had sold the race R1 but I still had the race CB500 and did 2 test days which was my only time on track in 2020.

That was it for 2020. My previous bikes were much newer bikes which had Quickshifters fitted, last being the 1299s so that was on the shopping list, I had tried my best to live without one which is easily done but because I was thinking about track days for 2021 I decided that it would make sense to get one.

First job for 2021 was swapping out the standard grips for something different. I usually use Renthal grips but fancied trying the Progrip 717 SBK grips which I’m very pleased with.

Second job was fitting the Translogic QS, if not standard with the bikes I’ve had my usual go to shifters is HM but I got this at a good price and it’s the best standalone QS that I have ever used.

Best single mod on any GSXR1000 is an Accossata master cylinder. I've had them on 6 of mine. (The same one)

Earlier this season I put on the RCS19. I had no intentions of fitting one but after the track day I decided to steal the one from the wife’s bike.

I finally got round to booking a track day. All year it has been a case of riding the bike to work, and then home again. I was looking forward to a track day.

Rode the 14 or so miles to Knockhill after work for the 2hr open session. Weather was spot on. That’s about the best of it. I think I managed 3 laps before I had no brakes when I reached my braking marker for Duffus, I quickly released the lever and then went for another handful and almost went arse over tit! Quick excursion to the run off area and then back round and in. I was a bit annoyed. Brake set up at that moment and time was standard set up with GPFAX pads.

I waited for a short while until they cooled down and the feeling in the lever came back, I went back out and found that if I rode at maybe 75% and came off the throttle a little bit earlier I could ride in a safe manner and at least get some track time. I stayed for an hour then buggered off home, deflated but I suppose it was better than nothing.

I warped the discs on my 98 Blade at Cadwell.

Swapped them for PFM Cast Iron jobbies, with a later 06+ Blade radial MC. I spent a lot on suspension and tuning on that bike, the discs were the modification that made the biggest difference.

I’ll have to decide over the winter what to do with regards to discs, pads and possibly having the M/C rebuilt just to rule that out. You can’t purchase the rebuild kit so I’d have to send that away, price is £40 so not too bad. I’m not convinced that’s the reason for the issue I’m still having but for £40 it’s worth doing, better that than booking another track day and losing out, which essentially is what happened earlier on this year, the one that I did after the one above.

After the first track day this year I had a few issues. First being the brakes, second was a leaking fork seal which I noticed a few days after, I ran it like that for about two weeks as it got progressively worse. I have suspension tools but not what was required to service the big piston forks so I had to wait for a few extra tools to arrive.

I decided on Hel braided lines, RBF660 brake fluid and the wife’s RCS19 M/C.

Another issue which I noticed leaving work one day was a screw in the back tyre. There was life left in the tyre yet and I hadn’t booked another track day so I decided to repair the tyre and use the tyre until it was done then replace in time for the next track day.

When that rear had finally worn down I ordered a scrub S22 from eBay, when I fitted it I decided to try my track pump to see if I could inflate the tyre and pop the bead. I usually take my wheels to the garage to the machine after fitting the tyres without ever attempting my own pump and I can confirm that it works perfectly well.

Q? How do you do the wheel balancing when you fit your own tyres?

(Impressive collection of kit you've got there :D ).

I finally booked the second track day after replacing the rear tyre, I can’t remember exactly when it was but it was the tail end of August. This time I got the wife to come along with the car with everything that was needed, first one I didn’t bother with anything but as this was all day sessions I decided to use warmers. I sold the race van at the start of the year so again I had to ride the bike there.

Weather was fantastic but sadly again, that’s where the good bits end.

Within a few laps I was getting the same old brake fade, I was also getting a terrible vibration from the front end whilst braking, warped discs more than likely. I changed the ratio on the Brembo which helped slightly and adjusted the lever position but I had lost all faith in the bike and that itself pretty much ruined the day.

I myself was struggling, physically, such an unfit bastard now, every session I was doing 5 laps max and then coming in, such a piss poor day but it is what it is. I’ll get the problem solved and hopefully sort myself out and enjoy them again next season.

Seeing this has made me start looking to see what GSXR1000s are about at the moment! Nothing that I can afford, but fun looking. I do miss my K6 from time to time, even though it was a bit of a rotter.

On my L3 I had 'wobbly' discs.

Take the discs off. Spray the bobbins with WD40.
Then give them a right good twatting with yer biggest 'ammer.

Already done the bobbins, no difference.
