Reading all this, I would say 'keep it.' Secondhand teething problems are normal. A little time spent sorting these problems out will pay in the end and you have the bike you want.

On the flip side, be interesting to know what dealers would give you on a px value for it. Or ring somewhere like Wigan and test the water. Just a thought.

I'm bemused by your last part ? Why would i send it to a different dealer in P/X ? I don't think it'd be a terrible price... but i also don't think it'd quite be what it stands me.

This is just a general rant, given what's been said up there ^^^^^^

These sorts of bikes (not just the one under discussion) aren't mass market cheapies designed to carry your wife and three kids + 1 months produce to market. They're premium priced things aimed at a certain market - men (mainly) with deep pockets and a car in the garage.

Therefore, for the money (often as much as a half-decent car) it's not unreasonable to expect a product that doesn't:

- have bolts made of cheese that are never expected to be undone
- petrol tanks that fail if you try to remove them or actually put petrol in
- need to be kept in a centrally heated garage 3-4 months of the year
- turn into a heap of fur if they get wet
- have design faults that don't get rectified until a new engine/model comes out*
- only look mint for a month - unless if you live in California
- have headers that go brown after 5 minutes use

(Actually, importing second hand bikes from California isn't a bad idea!)

* and YOU have to pay £££s to keep on top of

The motorbike industry has been making what it sees as deposable product for years - and the piss taking is across all manaufacturers - Ducati make bolts from cheese, Kawasaki paint sloughs off the swing arm in seconds - and then the wheels start to flake, Buell decided that we were all beta testers of their products, and HD sell you something that is half complete.
When I had my KTM 950 SM, it thought it was bombproof, and then I saw one that had been keep in a shed over winter. The engine was more orange than the bodywork.

It would help if we all complained a lot more about the product they try and sell us - or stopped buying the sub-standard Matt they offer up ...

That said, I understand Weeksy issue having just install the race pack - it's not exactly free for him to exchange unless some how he can de-install it, and then load onto anything new.

We would have to keep your XSR, but as you say, you were changing it anyway.

You being happy is worth much more than the sale of a motorcycle.

That's not possible. It's encoded into the ECU via vin and serial number.

Keep it! You love the 690s and there is no guarantee another will be any better and you'll lose money to back this as you've paid for the track pack to be installed. Madness! Just keep it and get the bolt sorted at his expense.

FWIW I thought it looked superb with the tail tidy and akra and I had bike envy and I swore (again! ) I'd never have another KTM!

It’s the model you want, it was a good price, it’s 90% right with some good aftermarket bits bolted on, just has some minor niggles which can be fairly easily sorted.

I know you’ve said you don’t really get attached to your bikes but I’ve always found, with second hand stuff, it’s the sorting of problems that makes them yours.

Exactly! All of that ^^^ As I said it was a general manufaturer rant, inspired by the current discussion. If car makers did that sort of stuff we'd be pretty vociferous. It's not like they can't make them properly it's just about making them cheaply and expecting us to shrug and say 'Well, that's the way things are'.

At the same time, everyone wants a sophisticated, stiff and light aluminium frame, multi mode traction control, quick shifters, ABS (fair enough you don't get a choice), the same level of power they always had but with Euro 5 compliance (again, I know you don't get a choice, huge radial brakes etc. etc. but they don't want to pay any more.
