New TV Time

Post by Felix »

Been looking at smart TV's so i can bin the TV Youview type box and redundant sky shit. I dont need any willy waving huge wall to wall neck hurting TV just 40/42". Android TV's i like the sound off but. If i add a browser through play can i add a wireless keyboard? Probably only come with one USB what will be a ball ache but typing with a remote would hurt more

I was gonna say OLED 4k, but at 40 inch it doesn't make much difference.

I had a 40 inch telly. Thought a 55 inch would be too big, but bought one anyway. Used to it now and can't imagine how small a 40 would look anymore.

50" is about the max my TV unit will fit but having said that i may be sticking this to the wall anyway to make for more floor space but i just dont want a huge TV. Its not on enough TBH and present one was last used five nights ago. Live TV is getting sacked as will the TV licence. I like the idea if having a big tablet on the wall so best be looking for something with two USB's. Cast would be nice. So i can add a wireless keyboard to an Android TV aye?

My Sony Bravia is coming up to three years old now (the last Bravia was replaced at ten years old and is still in use in the Inlaws Snug).

55 inch isn't much bigger overall than the 40 when the 40 had a good two inch of bezel around the screen. It's got an acoustic panel, so no speakers or sound bar needed, which frees up space.

It cost a lot of money at the time, but if it last as long as the last Sony, i'll be happy.

LG make great TVs - but the connectivity for me sucked. It wasn't stable and could not offer consistent performance (on 2 TVs of the same model). I have ended up with a Sony Bravia - compared to LG the ancillaries seem a little cheap.

If I was in you position I would look at a Samasung LED - much cheaper than OLED - and not a huge amount of difference.

When you say acoustic panel,do you mean the inbuilt speakers on the Sony?

The screen is one big speaker.

It can make the sound come from anywhere on the screen, it's very good.

That's cool. There was a UK company a good few years ago working on this, they were saying that you could have speakers in arty pictures hung on the wall etc. The company was being touted as an investment opportunity - I thing they were on one of the lesser markets like AIMS or summink. Dunno what happened to them but it looks like somebody got it working.

Our big telly is a Panasonic - 3yrs oldish and we're happy with it in terms of pic quality and user interface. Connectivity is pretty good too although I gave up trying to connect the audio output through the hi-fi 'cos the optical connectors are different at each end. :(
I messed up on sizing and bought a bigger one than I actually intended to - now it would be difficult to downsize.

I think the Which? people tend to go with LG and Samsung but say that even within the range of a single manufacturer some models are Recommended Buys and some are Don't Buys.

Bro-in-law has just bought an LG. Sound is superb compared to our 7 year old Samsung. But I doubt filly will think that a good enough reason to 'invest'.

I've got a 75" LG jobby and rhe sound is great, according to all the reviews.
But I still watch it with sound through my Sony Bluetooth headphones.
Wow. Stunning.

Another thing to consider is getting an external box, like a Roku or AppleTV. Most TV's 'smart' features are pretty awful and although it's more money, you get a fast, slick interface, decent remote and a load of other features without having to worry about the TV's credentials. Same with audio - I'd always use a hi-fi/surround system/soundbar to replace the tiny and tinny 10-quid speakers in the TV.

Dont need anything to fancy OLED or whatever looks best is wasted on me. I could be just as happy with an old CRT unless i have to move them :D Ordered a JVC Android TV. Only thing i did get a 50" one, JVC - LT-50CA890. It has the extra USB what i wanted and the shit reviews were wifi and sound. It will probably be hard wired anyway as a cable is there for the youview box and i have a Samsung S61T soundbar what throws music around the room what sounds great. It has built in Alexa so Planet Rock and Absolute Classis Rock never sounded so good.

I binned sky long ago. It was just never getting watched once Netflix was discovered. My TV has Freeview as did the sky box so no need for two. I wanted rid of the Youview box also. This is why i wanted a smart TV so the apps are all in one. TV will be on the wall as will the soundbar be. Next year when we decorate ill add a double socket behind the TV and sink the cable in the plaster so you see no cables.
