They need to build risk assessment into satnavs taking expected speeds, loads and gradients into account.

Big descent after 50 miles but the battery will not exceed 90% by the time you get to the bottom as long as you don't recharge at any of the 3 previous charging stations. This is followed by a long climb and to make the summit the battery must be topped off to a minimum of 80% between these two points.

They've already started doing stuff like that. SatNav informed vehicle settings have been around for a while - top spec Mercs and Beemers will pre-emptively change down when approaching hills and bends for example so it's less obvious to the passengers.

I'd be very very surprised if EVs are not already well along the road towards changing the way they operate based on what's coming up on the route.

Modern electric motors are obviously fantastically complicated. But crucially the vast majority of the complexity is in stuff which doesn't move. And well all know how much the home mechanic loves dealing with electrical and software issues!

Yeah agreed.

Trouble is, most EVs don't have motors alone, they have so called "Electric Drive Units" which also contain all the gears and bearings etc. Theyre only ever gonna get more and more integrated.

So you won't be able to take the motor out....you'll be taking the whole back axle out. I imagine in a few years times there will be independent garages offering rebuild/refurb services.

It means you don't need two casings, two sets of bearings and so on. Everything's lighter, smaller and cheaper.

Bear in mind that we get pushed to shave 2mm off of the outer casing size....

Our Merc in electric mode reads the road, as I let off the accelerator approaching a corner or roundabout the amount of regen increases as you get closer, takes some getting used too and manually adjusting regen as you drive with the paddles means you rarely need to use the actual brakes. The harder you come off the accelerator too the harder the car stops on regen alone. Can get another 10-15% range doing it properly

Aye....the old "one pedal" driving

The few times I've driven an EV around MK I've found "super eco mode" the best for getting around quickly. Maximum regen on the pedal.

Pretty sure I've seen stuff on the fully charged show about them using electric motors on boats round Amsterdam and also on a ferry near Stockholm.
The ferry was just for something like a 20 minute journey and had some massive cables to charge it up but hell, it was a ferry so pretty massive its self.

Neither of them had solar panels admittedly but the launch round Amsterdam was just nice and quiet.

Electric launches are quite common around Holland in general.
Appropo of being a dinosaur.....I was in the small lock at Zandaam a while back ( must have been about 4 years ago now!) in Mascotte, which has a 475 Daf....we were in with a few other boats some quite small day launches. The keeper calked me out first, so i opened the throttle to get her moving (27 tons....) and looked starboard to see the lady in the launch along side get a face full of diesel. ...these old dafs choke up a bit on idle.....

Loads of gadgets and car sim etc. So far so good.

My guess - and it's just a guess - is so that it's easy to tell for parking reasons. Lots of places now have free/different parking for EVs and you can't expect enforcement to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of every EV, particularly when you can get electric and non-electric versions of the same model. So you make the plates green, then you can easily tell who's allowed to use the free parking.

Yes- it’s a choice but pretty much what Dazzle described. It was explained to me like this from the Volvo dealership ( you order the car online btw):

“ it helps distinguish proper EV to those cunts driving hybrids and is important as more and more services prioritise their charging stations to full EV first”
