What would be interesting would be to do the same exercise with an autonomous car that sudenly needs driver interventioniansoady wrote: ↑Thu Aug 26, 2021 11:11 am Some years ago I took part in an academic study looking at (what was not called) highway hypnosis. It involved steering a pretend car made of dexion and random components with a projected journey on big screens in front. Not particularly realistic (well it was built by students at Aston Uni) but it seemed to work
Essentially I had to "drive" this thing for about 30 minutes along very boring roads until there as a sudden event and respond accordingly. I must get in touch with them to see what if any results were published.
Another version presented direction signs of varying complexity to see again how long it took for the subject to respond corrctly.

Funnily enough one overtook me - on the left - on the M40 this morning as I was headed out to Oxford for a training course...
Driver had his hands behind his head and looked half asleep. His passenger was peering out the side window.

I suppose more correctly I should have said 'vehicle with various driver aids that makes the person behind the wheel think it can drive itself".
I assume it had lane assist and adaptive cruise control switched on.
It was a Mercedes. That's all I can tell you. No idea about model.

There was a security personnel present to direct traffic at the crosswalk when the accident occurred.
Almost suggesting that a detection/stop system had been overridden.

And you're worried about defensive automated vehicles? Nah, you might need to worry when they go on the offensive

A Russian combat robot is breaking new ground in autonomy, patrolling without human assistance, navigating its way across a 100-kilomter route and working with a swarm of drones. The new demonstrations, which were announced by the State-owned RIA Novosti news service last week, may look like me-too achievements in terms of competing with the West. Unlike the U.S. though, Russia puts its robots into the field, and the technology is likely to be used sooner rather than later.

If anyone is interested, I think the UK equivalent is 'Project Theseus'. It's top secret, so just Google for info.

No amount of bleating about Robocop in the west will stop Russia and China using them.

Re: The Self-Driving Vehicles Thread
It only appears to be autonomous in terms of movement. I assume there's still a bloke in a bunker doing target selection and authorising the trigger pulling. Still, it's one step nearer one army of machines fights another army of machines. War as a computer game...they'll be recruiting spotty yoofs instead of muscular lunkheads.

Re: The Self-Driving Vehicles Thread
There are systems which can identify gunfire and locate its origin (IIRC Manchester city [not the footy team] had some, but they didn't work). Combine that with something that knows where the home team squaddies are and an infrared 'body' detection then it's 'only' innocent civvies to worry about

Re: The Self-Driving Vehicles Thread
Target selection and engagement has been automatic for decades, people just can't react quickly enough to incoming threats. Static targets are a bit different but still a problem when you come round a corner to find an ambush ready and waiting, I suspect all an operator will do is select a destination and have a manual override on the weapons. That is until the secret corporate programming changes it's primary directive and it goes haywire.Count Steer wrote: ↑Fri Sep 03, 2021 9:28 am It only appears to be autonomous in terms of movement. Up to 46 now, equalling the whole of 2020.Horse wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 11:34 am From informal contact with people in the US, it's more likely to be what they call 'D drivers': drunk, drugged, drowsy and distracted.
With 41 fatal collisions (I haven't heard of a single collision with multiple fatalities), you have to wonder how many collisions occur.
