Recommend me a dashcam for the car

Post by Jody »

Following last weekends collusion in my Duster. I'm expecting that I will end up paying in one way or another, even though it definitely wasn't my fault!

A dashcam would clearly show how I came to a complete stop with maybe 15 metres to spare, and that the other driver did not.

Lots of choice on the market from £30 to £300

What have you lot tried ?!

I've got a 100 quid Nextbase one, had it for 8 years with no bother, it's on it's last legs as the capacitor / battery is about done, but then it's being dying for the last year with no ill effects so it might survive a while longer.

Don't go all googly eyes over wifi downloading clips capability from the cam, they're dog slow so it;s easier and quicker to just stick the card in a PC and copy the files over if you need them.

Polarising filters for the lens is a good upgrade as it does away with dash / windscreen reflections.

I've got a Garmin dashcam 55 (now the 57 I think?) and I bought a garmin mini 2 for my daughters car. The garmins are easy to use, they offer parking modes with the right wiring, which is extra, but allows the dashcam to record if it senses movement when parked.

Nextbase 312GW here. Bit old now but it takes a large SD card. Records satellite position when is good when viewing on the computer as it shows your position on Google maps. Bluetooth allows you do view the dashcam footage on your phone/tablet so you can show plod that you were speeding almost instantly without dicking about with the SD card.

That's a good point, make sure it requires micro SD cards not full sized jobbies, they're easier to swallow should you ever be pulled over whilst being a tad naughty on the road

I wonder what the situation is regarding using your phone while driving, even if you're only using it as a dashcam.

Feels a bit catch 22

Only touching phone is an offence.
I always use mine as radio to link to car stereo.

It’s an MOT failure to leave them stuck to the windscreen whist it is MOTEd.

Or at least it is according to my car MOT station who a perfectly reasonable about everything else!

Lol. When i said large card i meant Capacity. I have an old dash cam that only supports 64gb cards. Think this one is 256gb

My MOT man just moves them and yet to moan. I took out the rear view mirror and the dash cam sits in that position so i cant see why this would be an issue.

Mine sits behind the rear view mirror and you can only see a smidge of one side from the drivers seat, MOT man has never said a word.
Although I do put 4 vehicles a year through him so maybe he just prefers the repeat business over being a stickler.

Just seen this for my car. Looks like a tidy, powered install courtesy of small loom that takes the camera power from the auto dimming mirror! Might stick that on my Xmas list!

They're very popular with SPA platform Volvo owners, they attached to the radar/camera housing behind the mirror and look proper factory fit.

If you do buy one have a look at some forums, there's always discount codes floating bout.

Nice one, cheers. I'll do that as I fancy getting one of them fitted. Internally powered and it overwrites as the card fills. Proper fit and forget and I like that!

I do have honey but normally get better results with Coupert and it links to the product advertised cheaper elsewhere. If you've not come across it before its well worth a go.

Remember that if you wire it into the mirror it only works with the ignition on, if you want to use the parking knock feature it will need wiring to the fuse box.
