Anyone installed one? What do they plug to? My RE would very much like one.

I took one off the wife's old ER6 as it just confused her. She paid too much attention to it and it was only right 80% of the time.

I've had two bikes with factory fitted ones and only ever have a quick glance at traffic lights to make sure I'm in 1st for pulling away.

Learn speed/revs and you'll know what gear you're in without an indicator.

Spent years and many 000s of miles without one. Current bike has a factory fitted one.

Nice to have, but by no means essential.

My learning days are over... think I've just got used to them and like them mucho.

If you keep going for 7th maybe worth gearing it a bit longer?

They're pretty simple to install fella, easier on a Dyno but far from impossible on the road.

What do you wire to. ?

It needs a feed from the coils (for the revs) and the speedo.

It works out what speed/revs equal what gear... like you could do if you weren't lazy

You can get plug and play ones, but the one I had for the ER6 was spliced into the loom. I might still have it somewhere.

Plug and play for me.

Lol on a RE? Maybe on a proper bike with proper electronics yes. But an RE I'm not so sure

Most bikes have diagnostic sockets, I think it's been the law for a few years that they conform to OBD standards.

My 2014 Triumph Tiger 800 had a full sized (car) obd2 port and worked with my bluetooth reader. On my 2016 BMW I need an adapter to plug my car ODB2 reader in, but it still works for reading the codes, etc...

Even my 2014 Enfield 500 Bullet has Keihin EFI.

Can't remember which Euro*** it is, but one of them requires you to have OBD - 'cause you have to have all the cats etc so they stipulate you also need to have the on board diagnostics to check they're working.

Hence even pokey bikes will have it now.

My 1997 Speed Triple - one which the only electronics are the EFI/ECU - has an OBD port.

As has been said above, I’ve fitted a few over the years and tap in to the wiring loom that goes to the clocks for your rpm feed etc. Once fitted you need to calibrate it, rear on a stand then you hold 1st at x amount of rpm then change to 2nd and hold same rpm for x amount of time and so on. It stores it for each gear and that way it will know or should know what gear you are in.

IIRC they come with instructions anyway on how to fit and calibrate. They are good but sometimes they can be a bit slow in reacting and can sometimes have a fit but more times than not when you glance down it will be correct and when you’re cruising in 6th it usually will stop you going for that ever elusive 7th as you can quickly see it within your peripheral vision.

I remember Mike Hailwood's reply when asked 'how many gears has it got?' - he said 'I dunno, I just keep changing up until there aren't any more'...

The Harley is the first bike I've had that comes with one as standard, it's nice to have and comes in handy when pootling along paying more attention to the scenery than what the engine is doing.
