Comfort Seats
Nearly every review I read moans about the comfort of the standard seat and that there is a comfort seat upgrade available from the manufacturer for £xxxx.
Do they put uncomfortable seats on as OE on purpose? What happens to all of the standard seats that no-one wants ? Landfill or festering in the back of someones garage probably.
I think maybe the reviewers are paid to mention the upgrades as when I bought the uprated seat for the Duke 390 I honestly couldn't tell the difference except I was £100 lighter in the pocket

Re: Comfort Seats
Are they like 'comfort' seats on pushbikes? I.e. terrible things that are over-padded and hurt after a few minutes.

Re: Comfort Seats
A lot of shortcomings in perceived seat comfort can be traced to poor suspension, I've found. When I first got my Falco, I couldn't do more than about 80 miles before I needed to stop for a break. Once I junked the standard (shite) Sachs shock and replaced it with an Ohlins that problem disappeared. And this was with a spring rate that was far too stiff and was kicking me out of the seat on big bumps.
Having said that I've had three seats modified by Tony Archer in Huddersfield and all have hugely improved seat comfort. This also solves the problem of standard seats accumulating, and TA's modifications are a damn sight cheaper than a new manufacturer's comfort seat.
I'm pretty sure most manufacturers send their bikes out with a plank for a standard seat a) to reduce seat height for the spec sheet and b) to encourage sales of their aftermarket seats.
Gratuitous photo of my Falco with plumptious TA modified seats follows...

Re: Comfort Seats
I was amazed how comfy the seat on My K3 thou was. Without a doubt, the most comfortable stock seat on any bike I've owned and totally unexpected.
I either do a gel insert in my bikes,or go aftermarket. The Bagster seat on the Zed is lovely on the arse. The stock item is a plank.

Re: Comfort Seats
If its an option on abike i'll probably track down a 2nd hand one. They aren't always that much different though, well at least IME? Best aftermarket seat I had was a Mustang one on my Harley as sitting bolt upright on an uncomfrtable seat hits you quickly. The Mustang Cost me a shed load of money and when I first sat on it I though WTF, its too firm, doesn't feel right at all. WIthin weeks it was "all day comfortable". Just never had arse ache on the bike after that.

Re: Comfort Seats
The xsr has the 'ultrasuede comfort seat' available as a (rather pricey) option!
Common practice was to hack out part of the seat base just under your arse which allowed the foam to compress a bit more, which to be fair allowed all day riding. The comfort seat has exactly the same base/foam so also requires the hump hacking out......or you can put the oe seat back on

Re: Comfort Seats
Until I bought my SV650X I never had a problem with seats,I'd read plenty of reviews were the owner's complained but as I'd never had a problem before I thought it wouldn't be a problem. It's definitely the most uncomfortable seat I've had to endure. The problem seems to be that it's to soft & you get the impression that you're sat on the seat pan after a couple of hours.I plan getting a cheap used seat & fitting firmer foam.
My Gen II SV650 is all day comfortable & my 675R Street Triple is a really comfortable ride, great for touring.
I don't think Suzuki or Triumph do factory comfort seats for any of them, but the likes of Corbin do aftermarket seats for them.

Re: Comfort Seats
The GSXS is similar. Eventually it starts hurting but takes a while.
Having said that cos I put a little tear in my seat I was thinking of going to Viking seats for recover with some extra foam/gel in

Re: Comfort Seats
I did a near 1000 mile non-stop ride on my GSX-R750, It was 900 miles to the ferry at Zeebrugge from Austria. Left at 10am, arrived about 1am, got off, stretched and ambled off for a coffee and to wait for the 5am sailing.
Those skinny looking seats were bloody comfortable because they were shaped to fit bums.
Worst bike was my NX650 Dominator that had a seat like the edge of a plank. 75 miles was about tops on that.

Re: Comfort Seats
It also is down to individual discomfort tolerance as well!
I once rode Bristol-waltham abbey-central london-bristol on a ktm 250 exc sm(was meant to buy a transit in WA)
Only coming back past Wotton Bassett did I have to stand to allow some blood flow.
Also did 22hrs straight on a fazer 1000 to Rome......just the once

Re: Comfort Seats
That, 150 miles is my max before needing to stretch my legs for five minutes, not being able to stand or take your weight on the pegs soon gets your arse complaining.

Re: Comfort Seats
Waste of money i reckon. I've found any seat holding your arse off the frame will ache soon enough. I find the triangle thing is the real issue. Wrist ache, shoulder ache, knee ache. that kind of thing.

Re: Comfort Seats
Yep... having feet under your backside takes weight off your bum and aids long distance comfort... IME.

Re: Comfort Seats
The seat comfort on both my KTM RC-8 and RC8R was 10 hours a day, 10 days in a row comfortable. Seat padding was thin, but the width, length and shape were superb. Add in the height adjustable bars, footpegs and subframe, which meant that you could make the triangle to suit you.
Saying that, my work bikes included the first model S1000RR's, GSX-R1000 K9's and Fireblade's. Much preferred to ride those all day that the VFR1200's we had on the fleet. Glad to say I was not the only one that hated those. Dreadful, unreliable things, plus the end can heat shield sliced my finger open when washing the bike down.
