I painted my garage door with normal front (wooden) door paint. It is a metal up and over door. The finish was shit and it needed about 8 hours to dry - living is a very windy town, the door then gets dusty and grit splattered. And in the 4 years it has been on there it has faded really badly.
I started trying to use a heat gun - but that was a ballache and I don't have enough years left to do it. I have sand the door back to try and flatten off all the dust/ grit / brush stokes.

Am I able to spray directly on tip of this with a car style paint, or Nitomors "straight to metal" paint, or will it cause compatability issues?
(The choise is for quick drying and a better finish, and little fading)

I've been planning the same job for a few years but every time I look at the double width door I think 'there must be a better way to do this' and I give up.
I was told there are companies that go round spraying several in the same area for about £80 a go, I can't find any.

So I'd love to hear any encouraging tips here.

I painted mine with normal gloss paint, oil based, but nothing special. Over 30 odd years I painted them 3 different colours, had no problem.

Although it is a PITA painting 2 up and over doors

I used Smoothrite on mine, it really needs doing again, I'll just scrape off the loose peeling paint and Smoothrite it white again

It's probably stating the obvious, but metal surfaces need paint designed for metal surfaces. Wood is a very different substrate (as you've found out). Lidl and Aldi do some good metal paints and they're not expensive, but they do need a sound substrate to be applied upon. As with everything, preparation is key.

Many up and over garage doors have a latch that can be slipped with a thin tool like a handsaw blade.
Check the top of the door to see the latch, sometimes the suppliers don't send a bit if angle or stop which stops.a thin tool being pushed above the top of the door and latch slipping.
Sometimes the fitters just plain don't know how to fit em and I've read the instructions, tbeyre not always as comprehensive as they should be.
Worth looking at, the key don't mean shit if you can open it with a thin flat bit of steel.

Which is why I drill through the vertical edge about half way up, into the frame and slip a bolt in.

I used white Acrylic Barn paint on mine after a quick sanding and wash down.

It still looks good after 10 years.

I have just gone ahead with some Dulux Weather shield metal/wood fast drying paint.
Will use. aroller to appy and see what happens !
