Snetterton 300 Road Bike only TD this Thursday

Post by Bigyin »

I know its a long shot but just wondered if anyone else is going along to this.

My eldest stepson has never done a TD before so he and his best mate have booked in for this to break their cherry as their thinking is that there is no chance of being buzzed by racers getting in practise.

As the usual Pembrey outing hasnt happened this year i have booked in with them as never ridden Snetterton before apart from in Marshals overalls getting to my post. Weather looks ok so should be fun.

Tell them to get a session with an instructor once they've don't 3 or 4 sessions to learn the track.

That was my plan but as its an MSV day the instruction is an add on at 25 quid and sold out when booking

What bikes are they on?

From the single day I did, (back in the day), on a low powered bike, all the thous tend to use that long back straight to hammer past slower bikes, sometimes not always giving decent space, so if they're not on 1000s, just be aware of excited riders outbraking themselves at the end of the straight.

Ah bugger I can't get Thursday off. I love Snetterton 300 it's a good mix of corners and massive straights. The old Snet was a bit dull but I really like it since the changes.

The boy is on a 2020 ZX636 and his mate is on a 765 speed or street triple (haven’t actually seen it yet) so not exactly underpowered slow kit.

I’ll be the knobhead on the 1200

I was hoping to do some of these at Snetterton this summer but the house move to just down the road has been repeatedly delayed. Hopefully next year.

I'm not feeling it so won't be riding the track day tomorrow, I may stop by and say hello though as I'll be out on my bike tomorrow, shouldn't be too hard to find a Multistrada

Brilliant day out, 7 sessions for us with zero red flags and only 1 brief shower of rain that didn’t have any effect on the group we were in. Drizzle before the last session meant many packed up or decided not to go out but pit lane was dry so me and the boys went out with another lad in the garage on his MT10. We ended up having the track to ourselves for half the session till a couple more joined in.

The road bike format works well and the lads felt less pressure and already hooked and wanting to do another one

Excellent, I was going to drop by and see you at lunch, but a nasty looking accident on the A1075 just north of Thetford closed the road so I ended up going down a load of tiny roads I never want to see again and ran out of time.

Turns out it wasn't that bad

A few pics

Nice MT10

Road bikes only ;)

Definite progress on the boys confidence from over an inch wide strip at the start of the day

His mate needs a bit more ...... never seen anyone ride so stiff and upright in the seat.

Good enough to deck the footpeg of the Multi at Montreal, the tight hairpin at turn 2

Nicely. Couldn't make it due to accursed nightshift last night, but lurching that way this Monday. Taking the r1 simply because the ducati is out of mot and can't get it done till this coming Thursday. But regardless, it ought to be a larf...

Interesting that the bike with the most power, torque and weight has looked after it's tyres the best. Lots of potential factors I guess, better rider, better suspension set up, best TC, sports touring vs sports tyres etc.

Both the lads lack confidence so are brake, slow on corner then handful on exit. I am no riding god but my cornering is better than theirs and being old school I don’t rely on TC and whack open the throttle and trust the electronics so I still feed in throttle.

I did tack in behind a bloke on a Beemer 1000XR who was leaving black lines out of the exit of the Esses towards Bombhole so he obviously was trusting the TC ;)

The 'mate' needs someone to sort out his suspension settings/tyre pressures. That is a seriously chewed up tyre!

I sorted both their tyre pressures before they started as one turned up with 25F 30R, the other one had 30F 28R which is what they had been riding on the road with and sheepishly admitted never checking them.

I didn’t mess with their suspension though

Out of interest, what did you set them at.....
Ones a pirelli and ones a battlax of some description. The pirellis run lower TD pressure than bridgestones, which might account for the hot tear on the 'mates' tyre.

The Bridgestone is an S22 which is the standard fit on them from new so its a 4 year old tyre with less than 3500 easy miles on it as far as i remember.

I put them both at 30 front and back cold at a guess and one of the ex racer TD regulars in the garage agreed it was a decent start position and see what they came up to. After first session they were 32 front and 33 back hot, second 34 front and back hot, 3rd 34 front and back hot so left them at that.

I ran mine 29 cold and they came up 34 hot all day
