Anyone here get gout?
Last year or so both my big toes have been increasingly painful, mostly along the top, with a sort of burning, sharp pain. There most of the time, but comes and goes in intensity. Can't stand heavy bedding on my toes at night, keeps me awake. Never seems to really hurt when I run, although circuit classes are getting painful, especially plank or press ups where the toes are 'curled back'.
I figured it was arthritis, but a mate reckoned it might be gout. Looking at the NHS website plus others it seems to match my symptoms. Anybody got any experience? Any meds that work?
I'm not a port-addled old soak, either, though I do like a glass of wine at weekends.

Re: Anyone here get gout?
You sure it's not the running?
As a (new-ish) runner I had exactly the same thing around Christmas time - possibly impact damage due to running shoes everso slightly not overlarge enough, if that makes sense. Kept at bay ever since by diligent trimming of toenails (because I'm too tight to buy new shoes until I've had my 1000kms out of them).
I mentioned it to the doc and he did send me for blood test for gout. (I do like a drink - so it wouldn't have been a massive surprise). Came back negative, although they did also pick up an indication of inflammation. Der.

Re: Anyone here get gout?
I've had a couple of attacks that could be gout - friends who get it reckon it was but had no proper diagnosis.
Came on at night, serious pain from the weight of the bedding but eased up during the day and had gone by evening - both times. I took an ibuprofen when I got up and it started to ease.
I'd suggest it's not running, unless you've got new running shoes and they're not a good fit. It's just too much good living.

Deffo not the running. I've been running, albeit short distance i.e., no more than 5k, for years. I have iffy knees and the pain from those is totally different than that from the trotters.Yambo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 23, 2024 4:54 pm I've had a couple of attacks that could be gout - friends who get it reckon it was but had no proper diagnosis.

The bedding thing is weird. We have this top blanket thing that sits on top of the duvet, looking all arty and nice. Of a night I have to kick it off, as it hurts my toes so badly, which Mrs. G thinks is me over-reacting.
As for the good living, we go 'out' most weekends, but during the week Mrs. G is like the house dietician. She's seriously knowledgeable about nutrition and we eat such a healthy diet that Gillian McKeith* would be doing backflips digging around in our turds.

Re: Anyone here get gout?
I've had a couple of episodes of gout in my big toe. Both times it happened around Christmas following dehydration so I make sure I drink enough water now and it has not come back. It's caused by uric acid crystals forming in your joints - the coldest joints so normally the toes and normally in the winter. The crystals are sharp which is why it's so painful.

Re: Anyone here get gout?
yep, had a bout 3 years ago, by about 2am I was ready to go down to the kitchen and chop my feckin toe off because I thought that would have been less painful.
from that I got a check up at the docs and found out I was also pre-diabetic. when we talked through the list of likely candidate foods I could answer no to everything until we got to Sugar, and suspected I had been de-hydrated for a long time.
I cut out most of the crap that I ate and I drink lots of water throughout the day and it's all good.
I later found out that my father had it loads quite a few years ago and the doc put him on some drugs that sorts it out, but the down side of the drugs is that you can never not take them, if you stop taking them then you'll have the mother and father of all flare ups.

Re: Anyone here get gout?
I've had a few bouts in recent years, doctor suggested it first but IIRC the test only works when you're having a flare up. The medication isn't very nice so I decided to skip the whole test and treat thing.
It's really painful (broken ribs pain) but I don't remember bedding hurting, it was movement that hurt but maybe my cheap sheets aren't as heavy as yours.
I now notice it starting so drink more water as dehydration makes it worse, hasn't been really bad for a couple of years. I didn't find diet made a lot of difference as long as I drink enough water.
Gout is a form of arthritis which would explain the confusion.

Re: Anyone here get gout?
Yep, every now and again. Usually big toe joints but also a couple of times in my ankle.i can usually spot the onset of an attack so rely on daily doses of:
Cocodamol with ibruprofen chasers
2-3 litres of Sainsbury’s cherry juice
2-3 punnets of grapes
2-3 litres of water
Tiger balm on the affected area seems to help a little with the post crystal bruising.
I’ve tried concentrated cherry juice, malic acid, uriprinol, vitamin C and cod liver oil supplements as a preventative measure which wasn’t always effective.

Re: Anyone here get gout?
Are the joints red and swollen, if not it isn't gout.
I get pains in my toe joints, I thought it was gout, so I went to the doctors and was told it wasn't gout because it wasn't red and swollen, mine is arthritis, and it fecking hurts at night
