Yes, various military types when I worked for BT, but the most interesting is a Chinese woman who designed most of Telefonica's mobile phone network amongst other things.

I've also met celebrities and politicians, but they weren't very interesting.

That's what spring to mind.

As a young bloke in the motor trade i met some memorable and infamous nasty sorts, especially when you doing Repo work. You learn very quickly that violent men work in an industry that allows them to be violent as part of their daily life. Also knew Pat Tate (Essex Boys) pretty well. A change of career and I worked with Eddie Marsan in the print before he became a film star. Later on I worked with Roy Moxham (writer and broadcaster) and helped (in a small way) on a couple of his books.

Sitting spraffing shite in a quiet bar with a mate. Next table a boy sits down and starts chatting as we were on about an up and coming old firm match. Conversation got onto music and this lonely scruff started to tell us about a record deal he just signed. Usual shite went though our heads about "BULLSHIT" anyway a couple of beers later we went away only to find out a couple of month later is was Finley Quaye.

Through work? Met a few business/industry 'movers and shakers' + a few politicians and Quango types - all but a few seemed v one-dimensional - but was most pleased to meet this chap:

I had to go to the Houses of Parliament for an event. Was asked to, while there, give a briefing about a project to Sir ____ ____ MP about a research project we were just starting.

He bought [very good] coffee.

Spent 15 minutes giving me grief, telling me what the outcomes of the research should be and that it was ridiculous to think anything else.

Then apologised for giving me grief. And continued for a further 15 minutes.

Finally said something along the lines of "I'll be watching you" and marched off.



However, to balance that, I also met many non- self important people who were helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, etc.

Also got to visit interesting places and play with unusual toys

I left Johnny Ball on hold for so long he hung up.

Carol vorderman, bill nighy, Alex Ferguson, Steve winwood, Howard jones, unfeasible number of lords and ladies, Bertie Ahearne........off the top of my head.

When i was a student, in the summer i worked in a hotel in the centre of Edinburgh. The Caledonian Hotel in the West End.

I was a Porter (all my mates were room service which was much better for tips). So id restock the chambermaids cupboaards and help them if not busy. Take Ironing boards and irons etc to guests.

I only met 2 'famous' people. Bob Monkhouse and Roy Hattersley.
Bob Monkhouse was an ignorant @rse. Never shared a sentence with me. But Roy Hattersley was awesome, very friendly, warm etc - top bloke.

Grand total of one 'celeb' bike trainee. Who was quuetly amused at not being recognised. Just a day being treated as a normal person.

No-one to speak of through work, but I did have a brief telephone conversation with Sir Arnold Weinstock, head honcho of GEC (English Electric as was). I was a mainframe shift leader at the time and a call came through on the Bat-Phone, asking (politely but very firmly) to speak with Bill Northwood (GEC Computer Services CEO at the time). I informed him that Bill was in a different building and I'd have to go and fetch him - was that OK?

It was OK. So I legged it over to the Admin building and had the pleasure of telling him to get his arse over to the computer room as Arnie was on the line. It was a thing of joy to watch a fat and out of shape CEO trying to run as fast as he could, and then surreptitiously evesdrop on the conversation:

Yes, Sir Arnold.

Oh yes, Sir Arnold.

I'm very sorry, Sir Arnold.

Yes, yes, I fully understand, Sir Arnold.

Great fun...
