Conspiracy theory ... or the signs of things to come?
Or a devious piece of scaremongering?
A satellite image of a large military training ground in northern China which is revealed to be an exact copy of the road system surrounding Taiwan's Presidential Palace. Given that the UK/US have said we would intervene if China did enter Taiwan

Most countries have mock ups of towns of the next most likely next enemy, so probably true, but nowt I'll lose sleep over.

Dunno if it's on Google maps but there used to be a fake Russian village at Cold Meece in Staffordshire and there's the German village at Sennybridge.

Imber, on Salisbury Plain, replicates a German town.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2024 8:05 pm Dunno if it's on Google maps but there used to be a fake Russian village at Cold Meece in Staffordshire and there's the German village at Sennybridge.
But that's a tad different to a recently-built layout of a Presidential palace.

I'm sure they're out there, they will just be examples of rather than accurate copies of existing towns.Horse wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2024 8:02 pmAny aerial maps linkies of examples?MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2024 7:57 pm Most countries have mock ups of towns of the next most likely next enemy, so probably true, but nowt I'll lose sleep over.

But that's the point. This isn't a generic 'example'. It's a specific road layout around a six story building.MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2024 8:54 pmI'm sure they're out there, they will just be examples of rather than accurate copies of existing towns.Horse wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2024 8:02 pmAny aerial maps linkies of examples?MrLongbeard wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2024 7:57 pm Most countries have mock ups of towns of the next most likely next enemy, so probably true, but nowt I'll lose sleep over.

Well it's been there for 2 years (according to France), so it's either a very very realistic training site for general purposes, or they're dead slow learners, or it's for internal propaganda purposes, I don't think for one minute it's a prelude to an imminent attack / invasion.Horse wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2024 9:14 pmBut that's the point. There was a story that on old MOD firing range near Woolwich was secretly developed as a large, bleak,1950's-style, Russian town after it had been destroyed by nuclear weapons and allowed to go feral.
Turns out it was just the Thamesmead development.

East London doubled up for Vietnam in 'Full Metal Jacket', particularly Beckton Gas Works (or Beckton 'Alps') as a place that has been trashed by an attack. Vietnam was probably nicer than that.

I laughed when some wag commented that the riots in Croydon were estimated to have caused up to twenty million pound's worth of improvements.

The "Cycle Courier World Championship" was held there when filming was finished. Happy memories.Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 3:33 pm East London doubled up for Vietnam in 'Full Metal Jacket', particularly Beckton Gas Works (or Beckton 'Alps') as a place that has been trashed by an attack. They must have just capped the ground to seal in the nasty stuff, that place was just toxic. (Phenols and other coal tar stuff + asbestos etc etc). It was a post-apocalypse sort of place and got used for quite a few filming bits and bobs inc Doctor Who. Elfin safety must have been tearing their hair out.Pirahna wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 3:58 pmThe "Cycle Courier World Championship" was held there when filming was finished. I saw it before and after (office window on one of my last jobs looked out over the 02, Docklands Airport and the Excel). Back in the day I played cricket against the Beckton Gas team. I think the sports ground and activities went on some time after the works shut down. I actually worked on a site that still had operating gas holders back then and did a bit of stuff on remediation of gasworks sites.
