Photo help -
I’ve just taken a photo at an outside wine tasting.
Trouble is there was no sun and so it’s not possible to see the label on the wine bottle
Is anyone able to lighten just the label?
Hopefully the sun will come out when it’s quieter and I can take a photo in better conditions, but in case not
Three photos in various focus, the wine bottles with visible labels and the wine
As a non wine drinker, it’s bloody lovely!!

The sun is hidden behind cloud, but outside lighting is still directional. Turn the bottles etc round through 180 degrees, or whatever is necessary to point them to where the sun is (albeit behind a cloud), and the label should become visible.
Alternatively, employ fill-in flash. If your camera has a built-in flash (most do these days) just pop it up and fire away. The results may not be perfect (the flash may overpower the natural light) but you should be able to see the labels.
There's also the problem that the large areas of snow are 'fooling' the camera's exposure meter into thinking the whole scene is lighter/brighter than it really is. It's exposing for the snow, not the bottle labels. Flash should balance it out - give it a try.

There is no cloud, just somebody else's computer.

Re: Photo help -
I originally had it set up the ‘right way’ (would have got the cafes sign and window in) but there were too many people in the way so I turned it around. Only had a couple of mins before people got in the way and forgot about the flash (rarely use it!!). Hence trying to see if anyone can fix it.mangocrazy wrote: ↑Thu Feb 15, 2024 1:23 pm The sun is hidden behind cloud, but outside lighting is still directional. If I get the opportunity I will try and redo with the right directions but I think the place will only get busier, so will be difficult

I'd try the flash first, only takes a second or so, and gives you an idea if you're on the right track. Fill-in flash is really useful in that kind of situation.Noggin wrote: ↑Thu Feb 15, 2024 1:41 pmI originally had it set up the ‘right way’ (would have got the cafes sign and window in) but there were too many people in the way so I turned it around. Not a lot I can do, if daughter was home I'd have her throw photoshop at it, but she's trotting around Dublin.

download that, throw it and another photo into paint and copy over the light bits you want

Re: Photo help -
Its much easier to fix under exposed areas than over exposed ones. I recommend Paint Shop pro but most editors have something similar to the "adjust fill light/clarity" tool.

I'm sure it's a hangover from film photography, but it's always easier if you get stuff right at the taking stage rather than trying to fix it at the post-processing stage. If your exposure is correct for the scene (or close to it) there's less post-processing involved and there is more information in the image to work with. Highlight detail (as mentioned) is a case in point - once that's blown out it's not coming back, because there's nothing to retrieve. Shadow detail is more likely to still be there to retrieve, but even then there are limits.

100% right. I was rushing far too much and actually didn't expect him to want the photos!! LOL I normally do my best to do it right at the taking partmangocrazy wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 1:47 pm I'm sure it's a hangover from film photography, but it's always easier if you get stuff right at the taking stage rather than trying to fix it at the post-processing stage.
