Screen spoilers / deflectors
Does anyone use them ?
Do they work or just create more turbulence?
Background: the Ducati has a small roadster screen on it, which looks ok
I have the DP touring screen - which is pretty ugly - but works
I also have a Puig Touring screen which when raised to maximum , stops wind blast but creates turbulence / noise beyond belief. If you lower it, it reduces the noise turbulence - but hello wind blast.
I know its a naked bike, I could stop being vain and put the DP touring screen back on but just wondering it the little deflector on top would help? Or just look even uglier?

Wind blast to upper chest is good... Wind turbulence to head is bad.

Re: Screen spoilers / deflectors
I rate them. Had a screen with one on the VFR and it was waaaay better than the double bubble I had before.
Got a small one on the CB500 screen and it is an improvement.

Re: Screen spoilers / deflectors
Yebut, it's not all about brute force deflection, the gap between screen and extension acts as an aerodynamic slot, and smooths out a lot of the turbulence. So less windblast AND no helmet buffeting.

Never got on with them. I think they were okay on one bike, but on every other bike they've been useless and made the screen flex.

Re: Screen spoilers / deflectors
They can work, but how well can depend on the angle you set them at. Pointing a bit forward can be better than parallel with the screen.

Persevere, angle and position make a difference. One position can make it worse, a small adjustment can make a huge improvement. Trial and error is the way (unless you are an aerodynamist with a wind tunnel).

Re: Screen spoilers / deflectors
Its one of the favourite subjects/arguments on the Multi owners pages as there is no definitive answer. the deflectors work for some people and not for others but could depend on rider height, riding position, helmet, speed they usually ride etc etc etc
I ended up with 2 different screens on mine, neither are perfect but each has benefits and downsides.
Full on touring screen for long trips etc but my missus hates it as a pillion as she gets buffeting from it. Shorty Pike Peak style carbon screen for local riding as it looks better, doesnt give her buffeting but has fuck all wind and weather protection so at speed makes it tiring on long trips.
I have been suggested spoilers and also spacers as those have worked for others but i gave up trying in all honesty as my compromise works in most situations

Re: Screen spoilers / deflectors
I found this with screens and deflectors. Solve a problem at one speed, get a different problem at another or create one for the pillion. The funniest was when we got a sort of vacuum that kept building and breaking between me and pillion so the buffeting zone was between us...very weird.
The best arrangement I ever had was the bikes with electrically adjustable screens so you could make tweaks on the fly...but they were fully faired too. Would have liked one on the GS.

Re: Screen spoilers / deflectors
I remember all the fuss about Tobinators in my GS owning days. Despite being of a similar size, a friend and I had them set totally differently.
And they never work that well.
I rode the Gs for a while without a screen - it was more pleasant

Oh yeah...Tobinators. Remember those but never tried one. You must have been a resident on UKGSer? (It's still going but it's all a bit 'corporate' these days).

I was indeed sort of 2004 - 2012. There were some interesting characters - and one really aggressive one that bought an Ohlins rear shock from me. And they were quite obsessive.Count Steer wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2024 8:41 amOh yeah...Tobinators. Remember those but never tried one. You must have been a resident on UKGSer? I was around pretty much the same period. There was some useful stuff on there and some pretty one-off things like the bloke (Vern?) that fabricated alloy panniers, often to a geological timescale. Quite a few of them were obsessive. I didn't post much.Mr Moofo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2024 10:04 amI was indeed sort of 2004 - 2012. I think it was taken over by the Bahnstormer business and they shut down all the chat.

There did seem to be some specialists!
Spoiler didn't work on Diavel
