What’s say the masses? I need a new car.

Hello everyone, long time no typing.

I’m in a quandary and I know you all will have opinions and all my physical pals are odd sorts who just lease electric cars - pretty much everyone I know has a Tesla.

I won a silly car (Cayman 981) which I love however I need to change it out for something much more practical.

For life reasons I need something that can act as a car and a (non filthy) van. I want to be able to go to places my Porsche physically can’t get to. And I want to be less obvious when I arrive. I want to be able to camp in it in Wales, or on top of it. I want to be able to throw the mountain bikes on it and also have something that has heated nice seats and drives kinda ok.

I was thinking Disco 4 however I cannot get insured in them as thefts are so high (I can get insured but the cost is twice what my Porsche costs).

I cannot for the life of me think of a car that is as practical, handsome, comfy, and big and practical. I know they explode randomly without warning.

I know you lot - you’ll have opinions. Please share them.

Budget is I dunno, £35k. Would like to go cheaper to have some cash for a new shed and wood burner. Only do about 5k miles a year.

I'll suggest what I have, a VW T6 Kombi. Here's mine:

It's the logical answer here for sure

I found them T6's cramp when driving. Had one for a day and use of it now and then for a week after and was not impressed.

This was not it but one in my town. Folk do some strange shit to them

Congrats on winning the Porsche! Was it on one of the competition site we know? Anyway, Volvo XC90?

I was going to suggest a VW Transporter. I used to drive a friend's regularly and it was comfortable, reasonably economic and drove well.

BMW 5 series tourer xdrive, many variants include heated seats, roof rails allow for Thule roof bars so roof tent / bike rack etc. Probably long enough to sleep in the back, I’ve never tried in mine.

I use mine daily for trips to office / see clients etc, weekends involve bunging the dog crate in the boot or flattening the seats for tip runs or trips to pick up building materials (air bag suspension on the back helps in that regard).

520D returns around 47mpg, servicing at BMW is ridiculous but I use a local specialist who loads up the service history to BMW / car and uses BMW parts during warranty period then the same parts without the BMW stamp thereafter. Mines running non-run flats and it is much smoother than the previous saloon with run-flats.

On a more serious note the Toyota Landcruisers are a nice vehicle to drive (4wd but a lot more refined than a pick up truck)
Some nice ones with not too many miles, suppose it depends if you need Euro 6 or not as the more recent ones can be a bit pricier.

I’ve got a T6.1 transporter kombi but for 5k miles a year I wouldn’t recommend a diesel. Spend £15k on a 4wd Toyota alphard hybrid. It’ll be an import but at that budget you’ll get a mint one perfect for all you want and £20k in the bank.

I thought the answer to this question was always Panigale. Somebody's slacking. :(

Got to say, I actually quite like that. I thought it was pure lecky, but it's a hybrid. Lecky only range is still pretty good though at (admittedly CTLC optimistic) 180km. Overall range 1000kms. 0-62mph in 3.6 secs!!!

As for the original question. I'd probably look at a Jap import, they are very well equipped and flexible inside. They tend to have V6 petrol engines. Sometimes not the most stylish things to look at though.

You could get one of those, and then a nice sports car for your Porsche replacement?

How much cargo space is needed (if a Disco will do the job, you hardly need a Transit/T6 etc). How s/h would you go? You can have a 30k miles Audi Q7 for under £35k.

Have test drives booked for a Disco, Volvo, have driven a T6 (lovely van but too much van). Also drive a Q7 but it’s too nice for what I want. I want to be able to drive and park anywhere. Don’t want low profile tyres with big expensive wheels.

When I moved over here, I thought I'd treat myself to a 4x4 (Discovery, Landcruiser type) . Looked at a few, nothing took my fancy.
Had to buy something quickly as I was without a car (given 30 days to get rid of my UK plated one).

Stopgap car purchased-Fiat Doblo. Thought I'd have it a couple of months. 3½ years on, still have it, the most practical car I have ever owned.

I am looking for a "silly car" now (so no EV's)o enjoy driving again, probably a 2 seater. Doblo will stay until death.

If you want a Disco, get a Disco.

A Land Cruiser is more sensible but get what you want.

IMO the latest LC does look good. But expensive at present I'd guess.
