A Couple of Questions About Dreams

Q1. You know how people will say something like "I had to pinch myself just to make sure I wasn't dreaming"? Well, do any of you actually do that in a dream? It doesn't seem to matter how absurd my dreams are I almost always just accept them as real until I wake up and realise the nonsense I've just lived through.
Q2. Regarding that "almost" up there. ^^^ Twice recently I've been dreaming and the dream has become so absurd that I realised I was dreaming and forced myself to wake up and even then I didn't pinch myself to see if I was dreaming. Has anybody else realised they were dreaming and woken themselves up?
Q3. Or am I just weird?

Q2 yes, fairly common for me. I dream a LOT and always pretty much completely bonkers. Often i'll think "fuck this, i'm not enjoying this" and wake myself up.
Last night with some of the lurgy my dreams were exceptionally vivid

I get sleep paralysis from time to time, not quite what you’re talking about but from as far back as I can remember I have suffered from it, sometimes it can be frequent, other times it can be years without having any. They are brutal, apparently everyone will have one episode in their life but I’ve had my fair share and it’s torture.
As for what you’re talking about I have occasionally woke up and believed something (what I was dreaming about) to be so absolutely true it either has me really happy and excited or pissed off, then I soon realise it was a dream and the mood returns to normal.
Another thing that affected me was dreams I’d have after my brother died, I hated those, it’s hard to explain but I’d be dreaming about him and he’d be alive and I knew in the dream that he shouldn’t be, that he had died, it was almost a scenario like “shouldn’t you be dead, I know you’re dead, maybe it was all a lie and you’re actually alive”…………like a tease and that there was hope he was alive but obviously that wasn’t the case, they were tough ones to deal with when waking up and realising it all.
I’d have the same ones about my mum, she passed in 2015 and I’ve had ones the same about her, she told me way back she had similar ones about Steven.
The ones I find you remember the most that seem so real alway are the ones you have after waking up at say 3am, then going back to sleep for a few hours before waking for work, it’s in those two hours that I will have the more vivid dreams that I remember.

I remember that many, many years ago I woke myself up laughing by telling myself a funny/absurd story in my dream.
I was riding my bike along a road when a copper stepped out and stopped me. 'I'm sorry, you can't go any further down the road'.
' Why not?' I said.
'The road is blocked. There's been a fall of monster shit.'

Q1 for me. I (mostly) really enjoy my dreams. So much so, if the wife is watching something i' not interested in, so i'm bored i think i might as well go to bed and hopefully have a good dream!

Don't think i have ever physically woken myself up, conunsciously though defo. I sleep pretty well tbh but have some mental dreams when on painkillers as i so rarely take them.
Had a nasty cold last week and had some mad dreams on paracetamols. Sometimes i can realise i am in a dream and i force myself out of it to them still be in another dream, that is a proper headfuck.
I used to suffer with sleep walking when i was younger. Some times i would wake up from a dream in a totally different room.
Once i had a dream that i was being controlled by some other being, it had pulled my covers off and forced me against my bedroom wall where i could not move at all - i woke up against the wall with my covers on the floor, that freaked me out a bit.
The brain is a powerful thing, who knows what it is really capable of!

I've had several instances where, when drifting off to sleep, my train of thought has gone from linear to 'exponential' and from sensible to surreal (if those descriptions make sense!).
At that point, another part of my brain, presumably the bit that was monitoring and allowed those observations) has interrupted with "Oooh - you're going to sleep!" - at which point I wake up (unwanted, no choice).

Sleep paralysis: never knew it was called that. Experienced it a few times and it's really unpleasant to say the least. I also have vivid dreams of floating above the ground, almost being able to levitate at will. These are kind of enjoyable but weird at the same time.

I have wonderful dreams and talk to my late mum and my late wife.
Always wake up happy.
But also nightmares of my thug brother attacking and/or scaring me. Wake up terrified.
The wanker only lives 5 miles away.

Coming up to 6 years now but i still desperately miss my Mum. First time I saw her in a dream I was shouting to my Sister "It's mum its mum", but neither could hear me. I woke up with the most dreadful feeling of frustration and upset. Next few times i'd see her in the distance but couldn't get there. Again, dreadful feeling of upset when waking. Eventually I was speaking with her in a conversation in a group, but couldn't acknowledge her being back. Less frustrating. Now when I see her i'm just really happy I have. The mind is a strange place...

I've had dreams where I've thought 'this isn't possible, it can't be right, you're dreaming' and woken up....only to find I've woken up in the dream and it's still within the dream so I'm still actually asleep irl and eventually just had to say 'nope, still not right, wake up!'.
Used to dream I could swim through the air when I was a kid. Usually after actually swimming during the day...muscle memory I guess. Waking up was pretty disappointing.

I have nothing to add to this thread as I don't remember any of my dreams.
I do however get deja vu quite a lot!

Vivid scary dreams was one of the side effects of my blood pressure tablets.
Stopped taking them and had none since.
Now need to ask doctor for new medication.

I've had that quite a lot, but very irregularly like you say. Been a couple of years I think. I vividly remember my first one and was 100% convinced that I was dying and that this was how it must feel.
I slowly learnt to try and relax rather than fight it in a panic, to tell myself it's just a dream and then it often just sort of melts away and my eyes open.
Sometimes it doesn't though and it's even worse

It's kind of like some horror film where you have to truly believe it's not real before you're allowed to escape... if you have any doubts then you stay trapped. Not very nice. 1/10, would not recommend.

The ones I remember are all very violent. Usually involves slaughtering family members in a video game type scenario.

Pretty sure I dream every night, just becuase everyone does right? Don't you go mental if you
don't dream, or was that just an episode of Star Trek*?
The only ones I remember are the ones where I'm late, forgotten something, had a minor inconvenience of some nature etc.

I have a dull sub-conscious.
*Eyes in the Dark....One moooon ciiiircles..... Probably only KFB who has any idea what I'm on about

As Pietin says 'the mind is a strange place'. Imagine if you started to see/imagine the things you dream...while you're awake. I guess that's the sort of thing that happens and fills psychiatric wards/secure units. All that dream stuff is there in our heads

Fortunately, for most of us it only gets out when we're asleep.

Vivid/lucid dreams are a side effect of sleeping with a nicotine patch on - as I found out.
I went to Gordon Ramsey's party and had a great time. I spent the night chatting to all of his friends and woke up feeling like I hadn't slept at all.
