Velocette Viceroy
I have this on the bench very close to wanting to run.
While piddling about I noticed that the central flywheel nut was loose. Honestly cant remember if it was like that, but it is unlikely.
Tried tightening it and the obvious happened, fortunately to the nut , not the crank.
Took the motor out (about 10 minutes) and drove to a local engineer who measured the thread on the crank at a 26tpi cycle thread in 9/16ths.
He hadn't got a tap, but thinks he can borrow one. Meanwhile the experts in the club tell me it can't be cyclethread and must be whitworth. (there is only a 5degree difference in the thread angle) , but no one does whit in 26tpi above a 1/4.
Vould be British Brass...but not highly likely.
So, I found a supplier of nuts in 26tpi cycle thread ....but £15 for 2!.
I guess they have been polished by oiled Nubian virgins using fresh baby rabbits.
Any way...when they arrive I will offer them up...

The difference between cycle and BSF is only in the thread angle - 60 degrees as against 55. Purists will disagree but in my experience especially when dealing with old worn bits the difference is academic. I would actually be very doubtful that a 9/16" 26 tpi thread was anything but Cycle regardless of expert opinion (and it certainly wouldn't be Whitworth as that term is used to denote the coarse thread ie BSW), however I do remember from when I had a Venom that for some reason Velos seemed to prefer BSF. Cycle and Brass are to all intents and purposes identical.
Your engineer obviously doesn't know about Tracy Tools who will supply almost any sort of tap. For a one-off a carbon steel one will be fine (and actually will cut better than HSS when new).
Oh, BTW good luck with it - I quite fancied a Valiant that was up for sale a little while ago but missed it.

Yes...I was thinking the thread would be a little worn....and I just found out why it didn't start (perhaps as well with no flywheel nut) ....the tdc mark is around 30 degrees out.

I should add to my last that the flywheel is on a taper...but there is no balance factor so i wont be shifting it as they are f******' tight.
If i ever get it running it will be a naked scooter, though i do have all the body work.
And last night the club tech sev. told me that they have nuts at 50p...makes the ultra smooth nubian polished ones look expensively wrong.

Do you know the thickness of these nuts as it happens I need a 9/16" x 26 tpi thin nut for the front wheel of my Fanny-B?

Yes, but his will be a lot more than 50p!
Actually, he doesn't list a thin one in 9/16" just normal thickness although I expect I could turn one down.

Get a pic of the naked viceroy up. I've never seen one without its clothes on

Yes, me too. A lot of effort went in to create something which had missed its target audience but seemed to be well thought out. Like other Velos however, which always needed engineers to own them, it probably required substantial post-purchase fettling.

They said much the same about the le...it was the police that kept those going.
There was a police bike that used most of a viceroy...the deemster. It had about 4 buckets of added ugly.
