I have them in my back garden all the time, they make a right racket when one moves in on another's territory.

I also occasionally get Mink too, they're cute, but terrible for the ecosystem.

We have at least a couple* that come every night. We leave food out for them in a cat carrier thing.


*They all look the same to me, if that's not hedgeist, but I put a trail camera in the garden and although they come and go several times a night, I've only seen two together.

Used to get lots in bith our previous houses. They can be noisy little beasts when shagging.

There shit looks like black slugs on the lawn. We've got a hedgehog house but we don't think they're too keen and never moved in proper.

We've also put food and water out for them before. I try to help them as much as I can, ever since I shot one mistaking it for a rat.

I have a garden that is good for hedgehogs but they don't visit as often as they used to. I think part of it ìs because a lot of my neighbours have paved over their gardens and now have fences down to the ground. This means places where the prickly pigs can forage and nest are much reduced.

If any hedgehog needs a nice gaff, I'd welcome them here. Will provide food and lodging.

We regularly have hedgehog visitors. We buy cat food pouches and cat biscuits to feed to them (we don't have a cat so we buy it especially for the hedgehogs)

As noted above their mating is acompanied by loud grunting. They can run surprisingly quickly too.

I've always known them as hedgepigs but not sure if it was perhaps my mother being her usual contrary self.

There are hedgepigs around here but not many - I've only ever seen one in the village but they're welcome and they'd be looked after. There are lots of tortoises around here and a pair of porcupines in the cemetery behind my house. They look after themselves pretty much but do not deal with motor vehicles very well.

We’ve got a few regular visitors in the garden. They have a house and are fed and watered. We think there’s a few hibernating under the decking.

You shouldn’t see many now as they should be going into hibernation. Any that aren’t are likely underweight and probably need some help.

I suspect our local badgers might be limiting the number of them we see.

Can't be lack of food, it's like a slug holiday camp out there.

Wasn't there a member on TRC who ran a hedgepig sanctuary ?

I have occasional visitors, I like having them and the oldest dog I have loves them, he'll follow them around the garden, fascinated.

I did have a house for them at the back of my shed where it's sheltered and pretty dry, well, it's still there, but the missus one day bought a big fuck off baytree in a huge pot and dumped it at my access point, so I can't get to it any more!!!

We used to get loads of thme round here and they had a little highway through teh gradens with a smallish hoel dug under each fence. Sadly, we haven't seen any for years. Same with slow worms...

One of my previous hounds was a French Mastiff (turner and hooch dog for those who remember that far back?) she was so gentle and soft, never barked.

Anyway, she used to find the hedghogs in the garden and very gently pick them up and wander around the garden and bring them into the house. Of course I'd take them outside and try and hide them. But she always found one. So gentle with them though. Can't imagine why she'd want to carry a spikey thing around in her mouth though?

She'd have made a good gun dog if shes that soft mouthed! My Dad used to wrap a rabbit pelt round a stick then put a wrap of barbed wire round it and train the dogs to carry that. They soon learn to be soft mouthed with the fallen birds then!

My old pal Homer did that

Went into the garden last night to have a look at all the meteorites plunging through earth’s atmosphere. Stood on the decking when the light comes on to find a hedgehog wandering around. I’ve been here 4 years, never had one in the garden before. I live in a small village, on the edge of fields etc, very little traffic but it’s still the first one I’ve had in the garden.
Got some food for him which has gone this morning so I’ll leave him/her more as I’m away for a few days from today. Looked quite small so maybe a youngster.
