How long should I leave my gloves in the freezer for?

I recently started using my winter gloves again, for obvious reasons, and I've noticed they have a bit of a whiff to them.

They are the usual mix of leather and textile with hard knuckle protection, what is the best way to clean them?

I've done a bit of googling and seen they can be washed by hand, which I did and didn't really make much of a difference. I have also seen it said that putting them in the freezer will remove the odour.

Does anyone else do this? Or what do you think is the best way to clean gloves?

Freezing stuff doesn’t work. It will kill off the bacteria for a short time.
Fabreeze might help

I was thinking Febreze too (they used to do an antibacterial version which was great for boots and trainers but it seems you can't get it any more ). Get a pair of thin cotton gloves from Boots, put 'em on, spray lightly, put bike gloves on top, wiggle fingers for a while. Remove and blow warm air in (hairdryer).

I'm pretty sure there are sprays for whiffy trainers....

...yup, if you search on Amazon for shoe deodoriser spray there's loads like Odour Buster (with biocide in). If they're OK on leather shoes they should be fine on gloves.

I'd suggest leaving them in until late April or early May.

However Goretex also hates dirt - it stops working

If it's OK for shoes/trainers it should be all right as quite a lot of shoes, particularly hiking shoes/boots, have Goretex in.

Freezing doesn't kill bacteria, it's just slows it down. Microwaves kill bacteria but can also set fire to non food items and melt plastic bits.

Bicarbonate of soda is an excellent deodoriser and I sometimes sprinkle some into shoes and boots - needs tapping out before wearing them as it's a bit gritty.

I did end up putting them in the freezer overnight in a ziplock bag with some bicarb soda in (in a little tied up bit of kitchen towel).

It's certainly helped with the whiff, there is only a very faint remainder now and you really have to sniff them hard to get it. How long that will last, I don't know.

Then yesterday, I pissed petrol over one of my other gloves. Best way to get the petrol smell out, anyone? (and don't say a box of matches)

Leave them in the sun - petrol will evaporate out.

I got petrol all over my jacket and trousers yesterday, filling up the poxy RE tank. Covered the tank, seat and run down onto hot engine.

Question... Can this end up in flames???

Been told petrol will not ignite when in contact with hot metal.

Stick them in a pillow case and wash on a handwash cycle with Nikwax cleaner, followed by the same cycle with Nikwax Waterproofer.

Job jobbed.


(Stick anything else Gore-tex in that needs a spruce up, save doing a cycle with just gloves in. Handy money-saving tips! )

Jogged my memory of years ago when I commuted a ZZR-1100 around 120 miles per day - filled up when nearly home and it decided to empty the contents of the tank through a split fuel hose all over the very hot engine. I literally shat myself and ran in to the shop to get the pumps switched off and prepare for Armageddon, which didn't arrive! Still can't believe that it didn't ignite.....
