Sitting here tonight watching the World News on ABC & they were reporting on the flooding in Libya. News anchor mentions how much rain fell in 24 hours & that two dams had failed, sending water surging to the ocean & making a right mess of the town along the way.

All good so far... right?

Then it cuts to the ABC man on the spot who claims, in all seriousness, that the floods were due to rising sea levels caused by climate change... Dafuq??

I haven't heard the news broadcast (or read a transcript). But at school I did learn about the water cycle.

Maybe the ABC man "meant" "The severity of the floods was made much worse by the rising sea levels exacerbating the effects in play, due in turn to climate changes" - but that's not a sound-bite that trips of the tongue lightly (especially for an American).

It also utilises the concept of causal effect... something the news media seems to have problems with as well.

However, was the Libya flood caused by climate change. Pretty much a certainty. Anyone who's looked at the weather in the last few years can see that things are fucked up. Greece was on fire in the summer, it's now underwater. Pretty much everywhere has seen weather conditions that aren't normal at some point in the last few years, Europe was cooking this summer. When I was 12 at high school this was something 'in the future' but likely to happen if we didn't do 'something'. Everyone is aware of this. Well we didn't really do 'something' and now stuff is happening.

I suspect a lot comes down to what you 'believe' in the first place. Whether it's an expert or my 11 year old son relaying it, if you think climate change is all bullshit you'll pick up on any mistake. If you think climate change is real then you'll go 'meh' bad explanation but not really important in the scheme of things when balanced on the evidence of the last 12 months weather.

I don't think it's a huge surprise that TV News is both dumbed down and errs on the sensational. If every time they reported on a flooding they insisted on a climate change debate to quosh complaints of bias then the News would take forever. They do occasionally do this, morning shows where they have a bit more time, but the 'experts' they can grab tend to be somewhat ropey and to be fair to them thy often have literally 30 seconds to make their point.

Its a mainly left-wing audience, climate change has been politicised and you’re not talking their language.

There is certainly some of that, the whole Gretta thing proves it. But I'd go on the basis of the whole science thing. The left go on about a lot of things which are just plain bollocks but climate change isn't one of those things.

I think the difference is. You say it was caused by Trumps tan and its a joke. You say climate change isn't real and you're just wrong.

To be honest better here than spoiling the News thread (which I assumed was meant to be a rolling 'Ceefax' of interesting and amusing news items, rather than "here's another Biden factoid").

But I'm part of the lefty / pharma / Biden / Deepstate / accidental-Marxist militia naturellement. Climate Change is one of our big agendas to make the faces of right-wingers go so purple that their hearts go pop.
