Re: Honda XR400
I had one quite a few years back. I really enjoyed it and it never went wrong. It was great to ride - light, easy and grunty. It was quite tall but I think most bikes like that are.
It was quite a rough example. I also had an XR250 which was an absolute genuine low mile minter which with hindsight I should never have sold.
I'd have another in a heartbeat - if I had somewhere to use it. And if I could find a good one, they seem pretty thin on the ground these days.

Re: Honda XR400
The DRZ is more faster, it's liquid cooled.
The XR is more durable.
A DRZ would make an acceptable SM, the XR, probably too slow.
I'd be happy with either (I've been looking) for a gentle mooch around the local lanes.

Re: Honda XR400
What about a road legal two stroke Enduro, my KDX220R was so much better than I was, even bone stock and 100% reliable.
Tho it was a pain carrying a bottle of two stroke around and a little measuring cup. If I was going far.

DRZ is loads better than the XR if you like riding fast, XR is better at tight stuff, DRZ also has leccy start, DRZ is more durable than the XR.
Seats, XR has a wider seat which makes it harder to get you feet down if you've got short legs like me.

1k-2k more would buy a 2010 to 2015 690 Enduro which would be at least 10 years newer and 30bhp more which is nice to have

Re: Honda XR400
I never had a DRZ but I rode loads of them, supermoto and off road.
I thought they were much heavier and more road orientated, mainly for nesh old bastards while the XR was a proper enduro.
I had an RMX250 and from memory the XR was closer to that than the DRZ.

Re: Honda XR400
I've ridden the RM that the RMX was based on, the XR was nothing like that, both XR and DRZ are trail bikes, neither are enduro bikes, a PE175 is far better for enduros, and Suzuki stopped making PEs in 1983, the XR is lighter and quicker steering than the DRZ, the DRZ is amazingly stable at speed on dirt, if you want to do 70mph on sand DRZs are great, they're a heavy old tank anywhere else.MyLittleStudPony wrote: ↑Sun Sep 03, 2023 8:22 pm I never had a DRZ but I rode loads of them, supermoto and off road.

TBH if I had to have a 4 stroke I'd rather have a WR450, KLX450R or RMZ450X than either XR or DRZ, but none of those are barking up the same tree as the XR, they're MX bikes with lights, but I've ridden a KDX220R, and they're better off road than any 4 stroke.

Re: Honda XR400
Enjoyed the one I had a couple years ago and should have kept it. Kick start only and can be a few kicks when warm. With some road tyres it’ll cruise happily at 65 and prob suit what you want fine.
Re: Honda XR400
Yeah, wore out the sole of some enduro boots starting my xl500
Much prefer the looks of the mid 80s XR range than that one on eBay.

Re: Honda XR400
Aren't they the same look, I had a 1987 XR250 and a 1994 XR600, they looked much the same as my mates XR400
