Some BSB budget chat

Post by weeksy »

This came up on another thread on PB forum
Our budget for this year in stk1000 was £128k, that included a new blade build and a spare bike, for spares (both bikes at race scheme discount from Honda). Also included testing, some crash budget, etc. It's not far off a 50/50 split of capital investment and throw away money (entries, tyres, fuel, etc). We've not been able to raise as much outside sponsorship as hoped, so missing a couple of rounds with Franco on the Honda Super has helped us out a bit... if you win the lottery, let me know

Team boss Matt already had a truck, awning, etc, so that's not included.

The running costs of the superbikes are obviously more, tyre bill of over £30k, which is crazy really as it's a throw away item after a single session. And crash damage is much more, I know when Josh Owens got knocked off last year at Snett, the bill was £7k which basically covered some fairing and tweaked forks. Rumour has it that Vickers paid £150k last year for the FHO ride but cost more than that in crash damage alone
I heard that Hicky’s bike costs >£250k to build
Speaking to someone that raced in super stock last year, Billy Mcconells total outlay for his team including bike was in the region of £400k.
I need to get some of these people into DH MTBing to sponsor the lad :D

The money involved in BSB is punishing in all classes. For a kid with talent, but no sponsorship it's impossible unless you have a rich daddy like weeksy. :P

Jon Ekerold won the 350 world championship in 1980,the only over the counter production bike ever to beat the might of the factory riders. This could not happen now and that has to be a shame. His book 'the privateer' is a great read.

I could easily cover 100% of our 'budget' for National Level DH series for £15,000 that's for literally EVERYTHING from fuel to food, to bike purchase and spares/parts etc. This season has cost us ITRO £10,000 without bike purchases by the time we get to the end of the year. But that's on quite a basic level of support/team setup. I'd guess for a full on 'Pro' setup with 2 riders you'd be about £25,000

Obviously going to WCDH would change that dramatically...

There's lots of chat in the cycling forum about the boy and his racing... it's deffo both of those yes... It's been a roller coaster of a year for him/us, with crashes, breaks, bikes, races, new venues, new series. Racing at Nationals has been eye-opening. He's in the weird position that you see many club racers at, he's fast as heck at 'regional' level, but at National, he's got a lot of work to do. We've got 3 races in the next 4 weekends which will show if any improvements are being made by him i guess... but it's a learning game, curve whatever you want to call it.

The budget side of things.. i mostly try and ignore it as it scares me lol... but if i bury my head in the sand i can just about accept it.

we bought this recently

Well, I bought this... he never :D

Not a bad way to do it.

Fella that used to work for me is a competitive strongman - competes in Masters at European and World level.
Came 2nd in European's a month or so back and was given another invite to World's in the USofA but it's not cheap and look like he'd have to miss out without sponsorship . Told him to create and GoFundMe and within a week he was a good way to having what he needs and has entered....

Do it. Enough people follow him and understand how difficult it is to get sponsorship to race (ok, mostly in other sports, but still . . . ) that I think you'd be surprised at how much interest and support you'd get.

Maybe before next season? (Saying that, I have no idea if there is a 'season' or if you guys just race all year round!)

Don't dismiss the idea tho - most people with an interest in the sport and seeing a bright/fast young kid coming through would be interested to help

See the problem with it for me is that we couldn't give anything back for it. We wouldn't put logos on the bike, or put their name 'out there' anywhere so i'd honestly feel bad about it. Along with feeling very guilty as well, especially in this world in which we're living in the current financial climate.

Regarding 'seasons' then it's yearly... but there are winter series which means bascially it's never ending. Today has cost me £350 already for a new rear wheel and 2 entries in events LOL.

I'm saying this on the back of a mate over here spending all year every year fundraising to keep her son in the GB Ski competition. He's an alpine & slalom skier and very competitive. He had an accident when he was younger so the French team binned him (he grew up in a neighbouring resort, French dad English Mum) - they have a lot of choice of course, due to the number of kids growing up in ski resorts and skiing competitively from an early age!

Once recovered he was picked to train with the GB team. However, there's never been really good financial support and the last couple of years there has been nothing - before last season there wasn't even a training program and coach in place for his level. He competed in the World Championships in Courchevel in the winter just gone and finished 22 and qualified for the 2nd run - he's top in the GB standings

https://edguigonnetski.com/bio/

Caroline sells stuff constantly all year around to raise money (lots of us give her stuff of no use to us but knowing someone will give her a few euros for it, so it's better than binning it and easier than dealing with selling for very little) and is currently running a prize draw to help raise the funds required (I think she says it's over £30k at this level, and will only increase). She works sodding hard to raise lots of little tiny bits of money that eventually adds up to help with the costs (pretty sure she and her husband still put in a fair amount tho!)

So, having watched her for years and years, I totally appreciate the effort required (mind, she can't do anything for him in regards training or tech - at least you have an interest and the skills to tech for Weeksy08!!)

Anyway - Didn't mean to hi-jack!! But -

Here's the link to the prize draw, just in case anyone fancies chucking a tenner for the possibility of a prize (they aren't all ski/France based and aren't nominative either, so you can pass it on to someone else!!)

Thing is that a go-fund me/crowdfunding thing isn't sponsor ship. No one expects to get their name on anything, they get to feel they've helped. And for some, that's enough. It's not like you are asking a business to give you a decent amount of money for not logos or anything. You are offering everyone the chance to feel good for helping a talented kid get a step up in the competition.

The other thing is that people aren't forced to donate. If they can they will. If they can't they won't. I can't afford to buy a ticket for Caroline's prize draw but I share links to it on FB a LOT and tell people about it. It's not a lot, but hopefully a few people that she wouldn't have reached will see what I post

I do 100% get what you mean tho. But at some point you might have to step back and look at it differently and let random people feel good for helping!! (Not easy, but don't discount it completely for ever!)

Good. People that can help feel good for doing it, and it helps Weeksy08. I read what you post and what Caroline posts and wish I could win the lottery just to help people like Weeksy08 and EdG. I know that sounds daft, but if I could help, it would make me feel really happy that I could.

Also, I have huge admiration for people like you guys and Caroline and her hubby that put everything they can into helping their child achieve the most they possibly can. I think it's freaking awesome! xx

My friend Brian was 3rd in the National Supermono championship in 1999 (I think), it cost at least £1000 per meeting to do, 4 of us helped out as pit crew and with race prep, none of us got paid, we used an old Transit mini bus as race transport and slept in a manky caravan we towed with the Transit, the bike had a Yamaha XTZ660 engine, that was actually 690cc, it was reasonably reliable and only required two engine rebuilds for the season, the two bikes in front of us in the championship were running 720s that required rebuilds after every meeting.

Racing is expensive, even racing manky old LCs in the 80s cost more than I could afford on my BT wage in 1989, and I've never seen a way of making it cheap, there were a couple of blokes at BT who raced Bantams when I was trying to race an LC, they were spending more than I was - and we all got a serious discount from the Newmarket Club as Ed Curtiss who ran it also "worked" for BT.

Two of my mates raced Supermono's in the 90's. One won a couple of championships, but struggled to get any sort of sponsorship.

The other got the occasional good result, but ran midpack most of the time. But he had the gift of the gab, and attracted a lot of sponsors who covered a lot of his costs.

Honestly, if you had asked me to guess, I woulda said BSB cost way more than the figures in the OP! I suppose you save quite a lot by having a production bike to start from.

I've only ever worked in international level stuff, I probably don't need to tell you the figures are just something else there.
