Cheers Mick. Don't have Sky so I'll wait, it'll appear on DVD or Prime sooner or later. I think that the TV series has filtered out some of the 'Oh, yeah, like that'd happen IRL' stuff that's in the books. Pretty cool though that Gary Oldman got to play both Smiley and Jackson Lamb...possibly the two best spooks ever.

In the series, Gary Oldman is excellent, nothing like what I imagined!!

Going for a lazy few days away, lounging by a pool. I've been on the lookout for a biography of Fleetwood Mac for the Kindle, but can only find stuff on the individual members. Any recommendations?

This is without doubt the most entertaining book I've ever read...The stories are fucking epic.

I've just started book 7.Count Steer wrote: ↑Fri Apr 28, 2023 4:37 pm I've sort of devoured all the Mick Herron, Slow Horses/Slough House books and his Oxford/Zoe Boehm books recently. Quite enjoyed them in a 'suspend disbelief/gosh what a lot of coincidences' way.
(The last of the Zoe Boehm books was a nostalgia trip around Newcastle for me - there's a derelict cinema in it and I guessed, correctly, that it was the old Jesmond Picture House. Now looks like it's new apartments with a Tesco Metro on the ground floor ).
I'd quite like to see the tv series of Slow Horses but it's stashed away on AppleTV and they seem reluctant to put it out on DVD.
I think the send up of current politicians in the books is bloody brilliant.

I enjoyed the TV version, think I'll try the books next then. I don't think the 90s are coming back any time soon.
Not sure giving away to the competition is very likely either!

Once they've had their initial run on the original platform they like to monetise the productions as far as possible. If there's a non-AppleTV market out there I'm sure they'll look to exploit it.Slenver wrote: ↑Fri Jun 16, 2023 9:25 amI enjoyed the TV version, think I'll try the books next then. The DVD market isn't dead yet. (The thing I miss with streaming is the 'extras' like 'the making of' etc. Sometimes they're the best bits!)
Re: Reading: The Book Thread
Ultimately of course you're right, but I'm not sure that's ever happened yet with the 'original' content produced by Netflix/Amazon/Apple as they're in the early stages of building their platforms. It'll be a while yet until any of them admit defeat and sell off their content I imagine.Count Steer wrote: ↑Fri Jun 16, 2023 9:55 am Once they've had their initial run on the original platform they like to monetise the productions as far as possible. Just seen this on Friendface.
As a massive Iain M Banks fan, I think I'm going to have to sign up.
I know there's a few fans on here...

Edit: Maybe not the limited edition at a guestimated £250!

I read 530 pages on The witching hour by Anne Rice, the renowned novelist who penned what became Interview with a Vampire. I still don't know what it was all about but 550/1180 was enough to know I wasn't feeling it

I've just started The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin as its had some fairly rave reviews.
Only a few pages into it so can't really comment.

Unruly - David Mitchell
A sort of potted history of the kings and queens of (pre-)England, written very much in the style of David Mitchell. It's quite funny and surprisingly accessible, for someone like me (i.e. not academic) who can find history a bit dry.
Recommended.

I was actually quite tempted by the limited edition, but I think it's better spent on a new mobile, anyways...KungFooBob wrote: ↑Sat Sep 02, 2023 6:06 pm Just seen this on Friendface.

As I'd got a £25 Amazon voucher I've ordered the council version from them at a few quid less than RRP...

It occurs to me I've never read any Hemmingway. Am I missing out? Which one would you recommend?

Re: Reading: The Book Thread
We did The Old Man and The Sea in year 9 (I think) English.
Dunno...guy catches a really big fish. There's probably more to it. Sometimes I think it's a waste of time doing these deep self-examination type stories with a bunch of 13 year olds.
I feel like I wanna read some Dickens, but I feel even more that they'd be more enjoyable as bed time audiobooks read by Stephen Fry or David Tennant.
