HT thoughts mmmm (bop)
Having some HT thoughts at the moment with some of the deals on chain reaction
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/p/r ... rma-violet
Excellent spec, 27.5 and Aly frame
But then there's this
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/p/r ... -bike-moss
Big Wig. Same sort of spec but 29er and steel
Lastly this Ribble
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/305015433621
Bit lower spec, but lower price too.

Hardtails will be faster on most stuff local to you and more winter proof. Ally might be more tiring than steel due to its unforgiving nature. I'd go for the Big Wig as it steel and clown wheels.

Dunno what it is but Ragley bikes look properly cool. Just something about them.

Yeah absolutley agree... they're both lovely looking things but i then sit and thinkBeancounter wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 10:06 am Dunno what it is but I Ragley bikes look properly cool. Just something about them.
"do i really want a HT"
"when will i actually use a HT"
Both answers are "Hmmmmm dunno". Hence having not bought one yet.
Re: HT thoughts mmmm (bop)
I have a 2022 mmmbop. I love it. Great spec for the money, heavily discounted. I wouldn't be without a hardtail.
I'd avoid the Ribble purely based on the fork.

I like my hardtail ebike, but the only real advantage I can see of a hardtail is less maintenance and better reliability (because there's less to go wrong)

Re: HT thoughts mmmm (bop)
Yeah as with @Mr Moofo i was thinking as much as a 'winter' role as anything else. The Slayer has plenty of bearings, but i've not actually needed to change many since buying (2 pivot and a BB). I was kinda thinking it'd be a bit quicker a bit more responsive. But as with everything in life there's a compromise, if i buy a lighter quicker HT then it's crap at trails and would only get used in really easy rides, if i get something a bit more hardcore then it's unlikely to be any lighter/quicker than the Slayer.Le_Fromage_Grande wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 10:56 am I like my hardtail ebike, but the only real advantage I can see of a hardtail is less maintenance and better reliability (because there's less to go wrong)
I did move thoughts onto a lighter faster FS like a Privateer 141
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/3673821/
This bloke will do his for £1300 without brakes, which suits me perfectly and works well in a lot of ways, but it's a P3 and i honestly think i'll be more suited to his P2 than a P3. The reach on the P3 is 490, the reach on the P2 is 470... my Slayer is about 455 and i like it, but i'll admit, when i've ridden his i've really liked the 141... but not convinced i'll really like the P3.
Re: HT thoughts mmmm (bop)
If you want it just for a winter role, don't buy it. You'll sell it.
I went for the mmmbop as I wanted a playful bike. The smaller wheels help. Yes, the ally is harsh, but it's a hardtail. I have ridden a lot of trails on both my bikes and the mmmbop handles it all really well. I'm slower, but often having a bit more fun. Oh and the violet colour is more pink in real life than the photos on CRC btw. I have the 2.0 as I didn't want that colour.

Buy the 141. Bargain
And you are wrong on reach - just stop riding with a 125mm stem

Re: HT thoughts mmmm (bop)
It's a P3 though.... That worries me as it's 20mm longer reach than his P2.

My Cotic is 3 inches longer than the P4
I no longer notice it - other than I am more over front wheel if sitting down.

Re: HT thoughts mmmm (bop)
Agreed i'm not. But i worry as i didn't get on with the Aether, although that was even longer as it was 505mm, the Trek Fuel ex9.8 was 475mm. The P3 privateer 141 is 480
However, even at £1300 without brakes, if i fit my Codes to it then it still is unlikely to sell if i didn't gel with it. The 2nd hand market is fucked currently. He's had that up at £1650 for a fair while.

I hear you man.... hence why i'm concerned. If that was a P2 i'd be collecting it this weekend as his mate is a marshal at Rhyd where the boy is racing.

Re: HT thoughts mmmm (bop)
480 is not a long reach. And remember that is standing. Actual privateer top tube length is very short

I've just been out for a ride, then weighed both our 141 and Slayers.....
150gr difference between them.
