Hydrogen Engines???

Post by Yorick »

This may be initially aimed at racing, but surely will be used on road bikes.
Quite surprised to see the big 4 coming together..

Aren't hydrogen flames invisible? If so, potentially less exciting.

No idea. IIRC the visible flame is to do with what's actually burning, so it probably wouldn't be too long before there was visible flame and smoke.

Amazing thing about that was the number of people who survived. Because the gas is so much lighter than air, as the gas bags ruptured, much of it went upwards before igniting.

If you look at film of it, you can see people descending from the gondola.

The whole of my knowledge of the event is gleaned from an episode of The Waltons watched on a Sunday afternoon when I was 8, strange the things you remember.

At last we have some sensible development. Given the sophistication of current IC engine management systems designing a decent way to burn hydrogen won't be that difficult and it makes a very good way to store electrical energy for later use too. I predict that in the long run this will be the winning technology and I am hoping I will live long enough to see it and try it! If the big oil refiners want to continue to make huge profits they will probably figure out how to extract the hydrogen from hydrocarbons in a clean way and the demand for crude oil will be maintained.

I suspect there is a whole lot more going on behind the scenes and major companies don't want to show their hand yet.

I don't.

Hydrogen ICE is ultimately going to be more expensive to build and much more expensive to run than a hydrogen EV (I.e. a fuel cell). Manufacturers make a noise about it now because the want to keep people on the ICE hook, a really big challenge they face is losing customers because their car no longer makes a nice broom broom noise. Just look at how everyone leaps on "ICE isn't dead!" headlines, that definitely won't have escaped OEMs notice.

Hydrogen ICE still makes NOx too.

That said, our lot are still looking at it. Every big OEM is and has been for a while. No news there really. Everyone kinda HAS to keep these projects going just to cover all bases, all that's happening with the YouTube videos is that some are going public, pretty much as a marketing thing for some reason or another.

Bloody daft vid title by the way (not your doing I know).

The vehicle they're talking about is an EV.

I don't get hydrogen engines, just seems a good way to waste huge quantities of energy at every level in order to keep infernal contraption engines.

Pretty much...but people like the broom broom. Can you imagine how much Ferrari are bricking it? They've pretty much wed themselves to the idea that the engine is the "soul" of the car. Now what?

Hydrogen fuel cell makes some more sense. Its basically a quicker charging (but much less efficient) battery.

Hmm. There are 22M tonnes of readily extractable lithium on the planet. Hydrogen makes sense in security terms if eg Chile's deposits are mopped up by the Chinese and the other 66M tonnes is too expensive to get at....any country can make hydrogen. It's not just about engine efficiency.

I don't expect hydrogen is going to go away completely.

'Artificial' fuel. If that doesn't work out, they're buggered*
