Ducati 1098
Does anyone have experience of running a Ducati 1098 as a recreational road bike? Are they fun or a pain to ride on the road. Are they reliable etc. Asking for a friend . Thanks.

Re: Ducati 1098
I researched them a bit when I was thinking of buying one, the advice seemed to be stay away from the first/second year of production, the later bikes had less issues.
Or just buy an 1198
Or just buy an 1198

Re: Ducati 1098
A mate of mine had the s version - but he'd also had the 916SPS and after the 1098s he had the 1198s!!
He went back to the 916 (sold it to a mate of his and when he wanted to sell the 1198s, the mate part x'd the 916 for/with the 1198!!) - his argument was that really the 1098/1198 were track bikes. He loved them on the road but the way he rode them (or wanted to ride them) he's lose his licence!! And he wasn't so bothered about doing trackdays anymore (he got more into road-cycling ) and felt he couldn't justify the cost of a set of track tyres each time that would only last one day. (Before I met him he used to race - I think the level below superstock, but could have been superstock, so pretty handy on a bike - usually!).
The 916 he loves and will (probably) keep for ever but he rides it only in the dry and then takes it apart to clean and service and covers it up till next time!!
I'd guess that the 1098 as a recreational road bike totally depends on you. When K ran his on the road, he did love it. But he always rode bikes that had a proper full on sports riding position, so it worked for him.
For me, any bike is a recreational road bike if you want it to be. It's about how much fun YOU have on it, not whether other people think it's sensible!!

Re: Ducati 1098
Surely any bike short of a Police BMW, Domino's moped or DAS instructor's CB500 is a recreational road bike?

This popped up locally and looks very lovely indeed.
Feels like a bike that would hold its value with light use but I’ve been wrong before.

Re: Ducati 1098
Anything non standard is much less likely to hold on to its value. I'd go the red one

I don't think the black belly pan and gold wheels are standard either.
Thought it is more standard than a full paint job on Chinese fairings

Re: Ducati 1098
Maybe I'm too cynical but the MOT gap, with a mileage increase, on the red one that has nicely used tyres could suggest it's been used for the track rather than been laid up.

Taking pics of a bike while it's soaking wet is a good way to hide a multitude of sins.

Re: Ducati 1098
I think that to, I view it up there with the bike still being dirty, or photos taken in a shed too narrow to actually take any pictures. All smacks of can't be arsed to even sell it let alone look after it.

If you're thinking of taking that to France, my money is on you breaking before the bike!

Re: Ducati 1098
The ad for the red one says the belly pan is carbon and the wheels are forged marchesini. It does have a non lockable fuel filter cap and I don’t know if that’s standard.KungFooBob wrote: ↑Sun Apr 30, 2023 6:22 pmI don't think the black belly pan and gold wheels are standard either.
