Now i've looked at more i'm not sure it'll work due to orientation of thread, the file seems to be external use as you're holding it horizontally. Which you obviously can't do for an internal thread.

Depending how mullered the thread is, a good new bolt (or summat) gradually screwed in (2 turns, 2 out)?

It's not the screwer inner that's borked. That's fine. It's the thread it screws into that's borked.

I can get another... but they're £60+

That's what i meant. Get a spare male item to refine the female thread. Similar (but opposite obvs) to using a good nut to tidy a damaged bolt thread.

I say use a spare in case it gets damaged.

Is it just not wanting to go on due to a bashed thread? Don't know the parts in question, so might be of no use..

If the threads aren't free running, it you can - screw on lightly until it comes to a stop. Then tap with a hammer in a circular motion, then repeat.

This can form the displaced metal back to where it should be. Used this in the fastener game on nuts and bolts, and threaded parts.

Filing threads and running a tap through a female thread only removes metal, where this can re form it.

Another thought for threads that have worn, had damage etc, is Loctite.

Now, Loctitie is a brand, not a product. It is liquid thread lock, which comes in different strengths. some are semi permanent, some less strong.

Screwlock is the least strong, then nutlock, then studlock. It dries hard, and fills in the gaps in the threads, which helps if they're damaged.
There is also bearing fit, for fitting bearings very tightly, but can also fill up a gap. Similar break free strength as studlock, but fills a bigger gap.
