Bonjour - French safety ratings for your noggin

Those pesky French have been at it again: getting ahead in safety tests. Have you seen the Certimoov ratings for helmets? They are a bit like SHARP tests, but with added rotational force The French ratings look like handy info, and they are even written in English. Merci Certimoov!

Current regulations test helmets in a straight line, i.e. perpendicular to the impact surface. Certimoov adds oblique impacts to its tests, which better reflects the real conditions of collision (e.g. impact on a road with a component of horizontal speed).

The [European] regulation’s pass/fail criteria for helmet acceptance is yes or no: either the helmet fulfils the regulation or it does not. Certimoov enables the addition of nuances to the tests with a score from 0 to 5.

Maybe I'm using the site wrong, but they've only tested 29 motorcycles helmets and none have scored more than 3/5?

I read in Motorcycle Rider magazine (BMF) this month that the current standard, ECE 22.05, AKA UN Regulation No 22, is to be updated, coming into force in June 2023.

Maybe that French site has started using it for tests?

Doesn't necessarily surprise me depending on the criteria. If (as I believe they are) looking at things like head rotation, full face helmets are likely to have a negative effect on this. They may of course help to prevent your face being mashed, but some of us prefer to avoid the crash in the first place.

Motorcycle lids have been behind cycling helmets for years. The cycling helmet industry appears more innovative, and cycling magazines have written more about rotational injury than we’ve seen in the motorcycling press.

One lid – the 6D ATS-1R helmet – scored very highly. But it's disappeared from the results! 6D specialises in helmets that protect against these forces.

Does anyone know if Covid has delayed the new standard (22.06) for protecting our bonces? When are we likely to see the first lids that achieve the new standard? And how does it differ from SHARP?

As soon as manufactures make the change after publication (no idea how the June voting went), although there will be a 3 year transition period to allow old 22.05 lids to be sold.

G'day mate! Have you seen the MotoCAP-equivalent for helmets (https://crash.org.au/)? In many ways, CRASH looks more comprehensive than SHARP (e.g. tests for helmet noise and other comfort factors).

SHARP might test more strictly the impact protection for the temple area, but CRASH tests for protection against rotational impact. How about an Elevenses video or Facebook blog about it?

The Consumer Rating and Assessment of Safety Helmets (CRASH) is run by a consortium of government agencies and insurance companies which share a common interest in improving motorcycle safety.

CRASH provides helmet buyers with independent and consistent information on the levels of protection from injury in a crash provided by motorcycle helmets and the comfort level of the helmet.

The program is funded by Transport for NSW, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Insurance Australia Group (IAG).

I do know about CRASH although not much about how it compares with SHARP, as I haven't looked into that or seen anything about it.
