I spent half of yesterday being poked n prodded at a local hospital, lug holes looked at, pressure tests, hearing tests and what I have might not be the run of the mill tinnitus.

Doc is booking me an MRI to see / rule out if it is acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma) https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/acoustic-neuroma/

Anyone have any experience of this?
On the plus side apparently my hearing is excellent

I had a lot of hearing problems a few years ago, and they sent me for an MRI too.

Didn't find anything wrong with my ears or the surrounding area at all, so that was good. Just a brain tumour instead

Pros and cons really, but on balance, probably better that I went so don't be put off

I've got tinnitus. Had a touch of it for many years, it's a bit worse these days. Coupled with old peoples loss of high frequency hearing it's annoying. But most of the time I'm not aware of it, it's only when I think of it I can hear it.

Similar to TC, i've got tinnitus at all times, but some days/weeks it changes from minor to more intensified, along with near deafness in my left ear.... I had surgery to help with a few things, it seems to have made things worse rather than better. Meh.

During these interesting times I'll take pretty much any excuse for a change in scenery, even if it is just looking at a big noisy machine from the inside

I have it a little bit,but it rarely bothers me.

Decades of 4 hour sets standing in front of amplifiers and working in the aircraft industry,plus the early years of not using earplugs on a motorcycle all add up.

I consider myself fortunate it's not more intrusive than it is.

It's good you are getting checked out,makes sense.

It's taken about 18 months from GP to this stage, but it's on the move now.
Only reason i bothered was because it's only the one ear that gives me aggro, if it was both I'd probably just shrug and learn to live with it.

I quite like them. The weird knocking and banging noises sound a bit like a mid-70s Pink Floyd album if you let your mind wander. I've dozed off more than once

I've worked in recording Studios and Dubbing theatres all my working life and fortunately, So far I don't suffer too badly from Tinitus I Do have some but so far it doesnt inter-fear with the day job and I don't find myself trying to filter it out! Luckily for most studio based engineers the average loudness working, mixing programmes and films is not too loud (not the case always in music studios As my mate who did most of the guitar tracks for Jeff beck will testify) the average over a 10 hr day for us was 75 dbspl, not too loud the reason is as you rewind the programme, film, or whatever, the sound cuts out lowering the average. All the guys I know who were recordists wearing headphones are now profoundly Deaf and wear all kinds of hearing aids. LOOK OUT THE EAR BUD GENERATION.

Ive always worn ear plugs on the bike and whilst clay pigeon shooting etc. PHEW!

The good news is its almost always not acoustic neuroma.
If you are really unlucky and it does turn out to be acoustic neuroma the vast majority of the time it is something you can live with it
(I have a colleague who has had it for years)
As an absolute last resort a neuroma can be surgically removed but the bad news is it leaves you deaf, but you'll live

Acoustic neuroma isn't malign, and it's usually slow growing. Or so my brain doctor said.

Has anyone else tried calling the tinnitus helpline?

I've tried a couple of times but it just keeps ringing

Like others have posted I have tinnitus albeit mildly but only in my left ear .. I had an MRI which diagnosed a Chiari Malformation ( like what Horse had but fortunately milder) . I have almost total hearing loss in the left ear which is maybe why the tinnitus is noticeable. I’ve found a cheap in ear hearing aid helps but it’s too annoying to wear all the time.

Yup, it's one of the - many - possible effects of Chiari. I've had tinnitus (in a very mild way, just hissing) for years and have been using earplugs since hearing damage first got publicised (mid 80s?). Tinnitus hasn't got any better or worse since.

As an aside, my mother is a bit deaf (enough to need hearing aids and the telly loud, but not so much that she doesn't hear anything you don't want her to ... ). However, she has something called 'musical ear syndrome' - auditory hallucinations. A bit like phantom limb for hearing.

Brain pan scan done, didn't take but 20 minutes but I did manage to doze off

They'd not have got much more detail if I had stayed awake

I reckon I've had tinnitus since I was a kid.

When I was in junior school we all had one of those test with the headphones and sounds and from then on I had to keep going to have it every 6 months when nobody else did. I don't think anyone ever told me or my mum why or an official diagnosis but I do have a constant low level ringing in my ears and I don't really notice it until I think about it (like now) or the tone changes.

I'd say at the moment i'm noticing mine almost constantly, i've got 2 sets, 1 is a constantly low tone version, sort of middle of the brain. The other is in the left ear (which i'm almost deaf in) which fluctuates and a higher pitched tone.

I'd love to have an answer, but i'm not convinced there is one currently in science.
