So, to get costs down and stop buying that posh stuff which we do, I'm thinking of doing a mass cook up. Was thinking of something with rice, carrots, peas, maybe minced beef?

Do any of the dog folk here do DIY dog food? What recipes have you got?

Worth doing some reading around to get the nutrition correct and avoid potential issues. eg:

If your dog has kidney issues, peas should mostly be avoided, as peas contain uric acid, a substance that can cause kidney stones in dogs without fully functioning kidneys.

We bought James Wellbeloved, bought in huge bags but only when on offer.

Good quality food.

You will get a 15kg bag of Skinners dog food for around 30 quid. way would last a month. Will you save much if any making your own food?

Shop around. Our pup is on eukanuba puppy food just now. 50 quid for 12kg at the pet shop where i can get it online for around 30 delivered. Have a look at Viovets to see if any deals are on

Jeez - the James Wellbeloved is good quality at about £45-55 for 15kg!

we feed our dog rawfood. we get deer carcasses delivered by a mate who shoots them for a farmer up the road, and skin and butcher them ourselves. we pay £1.8 or £2 a kilo depending on what the game dealer is giving and how generous my mate is feeling.
vension rawfood is about a fiver a kilo in the shops so we are making a decent saving. obviously we have to hack a deer up though which is a bit grim until you get used to it. its really easy though as you are just chunking it into lumps and vac packing it. average fallow deer we get is about 30kg or so. skin goes in the green bin. we bought a chest freezer. it is full. the garage can look a bit texas chainsaw massacre / redneck as you go in there and theres a skinned deer hanging up.
the dog is in prime condition, people comment on it all the time.

it's a bit criminal that we are giving prime venison cuts to the dog, so we went on a proper butchery course the other day, and some of the cuts (back strap / loin) go for £30+ a kilo so we keep the nice bits now for ourselves. had some last night and it was amazing.

my missus can skin and cut a deer into quarters by herself in about an hour or so. she wanted a new knife for christmas. if i ever go missing would someone please check my freezer...

blimey, does gordon ramsey come round and cook it too? our lab eats ~1kg including a bit of bone a day.

Our lot are on raw as well, chest freezer in the office and about 80 or 90 kg delivered per month.

I don't ask about the cost of anything to do with the dogs. I don't need to know

Just the 5, and one nasty bitey shepherd thing.

Our 3 Staffs are on raw as well, combo of stuff the Butchers does, chicken bits and Pro Dog raw food in various flavours (probs about £100 a month)

We feed all of our dogs with the basic dry food from the local pet supplies. It’s now about £13.50 for 15kg,a bit of instant gravy on it to liven it up and jobs a good un. We use 30kg a week.
They’re all healthy and fit on it with nice coats.
Why anyone buys the premium stuff is beyond me

Our first Rottie was on WAGG She loved it and was a healthy dog all her years with a nice shine in her coat. Took a litter from her and kept the runt. Put her on Wagg also and it was shit. She ended up wit skin allergies and we were forever at the vets getting tests and changing her walking locations. I just happened to come across Skinners dry dog food while looking online about allergies as some of them are hypoallergenic. Bought a bag and her skin started to clear up and constant itching was gone almost overnight. When present pup gets a big bigger she is going on Skinners also.

I just take Cerburus up on the fells and let him take the occasional MTB rider, it works out quite well as his coats great.

Yeah, I just feed him Bakers, its a couple of quid a kilo.
