Alloy welding question.

Post by Skub »

To weld an alloy frame part on a bike, does the battery need to be disconnected?

To weld ANY part on a car or motorcycle you need to disconnect the battery, IMHO.

I had a professional weld an alloy mount point on a Ducati engine. He insisted I removed any parts that were sensitive to heat as the whole thing needed to be pretty hot to do a good weld.

It's a bobbin mount commonly seen on the bottom of a swinging arm,so it would be a bit away from melty bits

Gas welding can't harm anything. Arc welding has lots of leccy though.

Gas welding can harm via the heat being too close.
Lecky welding (TIG, MIG, MMA) can damage sensitive electronics so its better you disconnect that stuff if you can. Also it can damage things via the heat.

Or in other words, how much does yer ECU cost to replace?

IIRC some bloke completely fritzed the ABS on one of the LWR bikes when he leccy welded a frame part without disconnecting anything.

If you weld a gs1150 subframe without removing the battery, you fry the abs unit, just ask Charlie or Euan!
