San Juan WorldSBK FP1 Results: Toprak Razgatlioglu in rampant form




Results from Free Practice 1, round ten of the 2022 WorldSBK championship at San Juan, Argentina.

Toprak Razgatlioglu dominates the opening practice for the Argentine WorldSBK round in San Juan after leading from start to finish.

After going seven tenths clear of Razgatlioglu during the early stages of FP1, Jonathan Rea was then pushed back to second as the reigning world champion began to find his rhythm.

Rea: ‘Nobody deserves to win here in WorldSBK, you have to really earn it’
A time of 1:38.404s was set by Razgatlioglu as he went back to the top of the leaderboard by seven tenths once again.

The Yamaha rider’s time meant he was the first rider to set a sub 1m 39s lap as everyone else struggled to break that barrier.

Rea managed to get within four tenths of the Turkish star on his fifth flying lap, however, the margin between the top two grew to +0.446s as Razgatlioglu came close to setting a 1m 37s time.

Slow to get in touch with his two title rivals, Alvaro Bautista finally joined the top five battle as he went fourth quickest - just over half a second off Razgatlioglu who remained fourth tenths clear of Alex Lowes with half the session remaining.

Rea went back ahead of his team-mate at the beginning of his second run, however, the six-time WorldSBK champion was still over four tenths off Razgatlioglu.

With 15 minutes remaining Razgatlioglu finally broke the 1m 38s barrier after getting close on several occasions previously.

Able to match Razgatlioglu in different parts of the lap, Bautista and Rea came close to challenging the Yamaha rider but were unable to put a full lap together.

As Andrea Locatelli jumped up to second to make it a Pata Yamaha 1-2, Razgatlioglu lowered the benchmark time even further to go half a second clear.

Bautista, who was now third, set the quickest second sector of the session with less than a minute remaining, before the series leader lost nearly four tenths in sector three.

That 10R badly needs a proper update,it has sat relatively the same for years now,with just minor tweaks. Kawasaki have relied on JR to make the difference,hence the crashes and rash moves.

San Juan WorldSBK FP2 Results: Jonathan Rea fights back but Toprak Razgatlioglu remains top





Results from Free Practice 2, round ten of the 2022 WorldSBK Championship at San Juan, Argentina.

Jonathan Rea leads the way during WorldSBK FP2 at San Juan ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu.

The start to FP2 was delayed following the conclusion of WorldSSP FP2 as track conditions were deemed not ready for action.

San Juan WorldSBK FP1 Results: Toprak Razgatlioglu in rampant form
After a dominant performance in FP1, Razgatlioglu picked up exactly where he left off as he led the way from Alvaro Bautista in the opening stages.

On their third flying laps, Razgatlioglu and Bautista started an on track battle, of which there are expected to be many this weekend, with an overtake from the reigning world champion at turn one before Bautista repaid the favour on the back-straight.

While the two main title rivals continued their fight - no further overtakes took place - the Kawasakis of Alex Lowes and Rea bolted to the top of the leaderboard.

Continuing his impressive race run, Rea found more time on his eighth lap around as he went +0.118s off Lowes. The six-time WorldSBK champion then took over at the top by the exact same margin of -0.118s from Lowes.

Shortly after, Razgatlioglu headed out of pit lane with the SC0 tyre which brought with it immediate performance, as Razgatlioglu went back to the top of the timingsheets by over half a second.

Comparing the two race runs, Razgatlioglu was consistently holding an advantage over Rea of around two tenths of a second per lap, while Bautista was also in the mix.

After closing to within four tenths, Bautista then consolidated his P2 position by moving within two tenths of the Pata Yamaha rider.

Following an impressive FP1, Iker Lecuona continued to show stunning pace considering day-one of the Argentina WorldSBK round was his first vist to San Juan - Lecuona went fifth quickest with just over ten minutes to go on what was his latest race run.

With FP2 entering the time attack phase, Rea managed to overhaul Razgatlioglu with a time of 1:37.707s.

Razgatlioglu found slightly more pace on his final lap, however, it wasn't enough to move ahead of Rea who finished fastest in FP2 and second to the Yamaha man on combined times.

Toprak Razgatlioglu holds off the challenge from Alvaro Bautista to top the final practice ahead of Superpole in San Juan.

With track action very busy at the start of FP3 following an overnight storm, Bautista, Razgatlioglu and Scott Redding all saw time at the top of the leaderboard before the championship leader began to stretch away.

A time of 1:38.229s was set by Bautista, with Razgatlioglu a further two tenths back. Alex Lowes momentarily took over at the front with a first sub 1m 38s lap of the session, however, Bautista responded immediately to go quickest once more.

Bautista’s strengths were clear to see with sectors two and three proving to be especially strong for the Ducati rider, although he was still losing time to his rivals in sector four.

Lowes then had his lap time deleted due to exceeding track limits, relegating him back to fourth position, before the Kawasaki rider set an impressive time of 1:37.417s to move back atop the standings.

Struggling to match the pace of his team-mate, Jonathan Rea made an early return to pit lane after being more than a second slower than Lowes.

Continuing to go quicker than Lowes in the opening three sectors, Bautista’s impressive race run saw him finally move back ahead of the Brit despite losing time again in the final few corners.

Rea began to find pace at the beginning of his second stint as he moved ahead of Razgatlioglu and into third, however, the two 2021 title contenders were struggling to match the pre-race favourite.

Fastest on combined times during Friday practice, Razgatlioglu wrestled back control from Bautista by setting a 1:37.347s.

Improvements on his next lap around resulted in Razgatlioglu going underneath the all-time lap record.

San Juan WorldSBK Superpole Results: Toprak Razgatlioglu obliterates lap record



Results from Superpole, round ten of the 2022 WorldSBK Championship at San Juan, Argentina.

Toprak Razgatlioglu claims a stunning pole at San Juan after getting the better of title rivals Jonathan Rea and Alvaro Bautista.

First out of pit lane as he looked to secure a good starting position for race one, Bautista set the time to beat with a 1:37.459s. However, fellow Ducati rider Axel Bassani immediately bettered the championship leader to move onto provisional pole.


On course to obliterate the all-time lap record which he set in FP3, Razgatlioglu did just that as he laid down a stunning time of 1:36.687s, which was the first-ever sub 1m 37s lap around San Juan.

Razgatlioglu’s opening lap was over four tenths quicker than Rea, while seven tenths clear of Bautista before the series leader squeezed an extra tenth of a second out of his tyres on time attack #2.

Traditionally a struggle compared to the races, Superpole was again proving to be tough for Bautista as Alex Lowes and Loris Baz also jumped ahead of the Ducati man.

Baz, who was following Razgatlioglu on his best effort, matched Rea with an identical time although the Kawasaki rider remained ahead of the Frenchman due to setting the time first.

Losing pace in sector four throughout much of the weekend, Bautista instead held onto his narrow advantage through sectors two and three in order to go fastest overall.

But Bautista’s time at the top was short-lived as Rea went quicker by two tenths after setting a time of 1:36.449s.

Baz suffered a fast crash at turn two as Razgatlioglu began his final time attack. And what a lap it turned out to be as Razgatlioglu beat Rea’s time by another two tenths, making him the fastest rider ever around San Juan on Superbike machinery.

Just watching it the now, wish he had been more patient instead of trying that impossible move, I think they’re getting sick and tired of being passed on the long straights, apparently Alvaro is making up 3 tenths on the straights, he just went by JR and Toprak like they weren’t moving.

San Juan WorldSBK Race (1) Results: Alvaro Bautista wins as Toprak Razgatlioglu makes huge mistake

Alvaro Bautista wins race one after Toprak Razgatlioglu suffered a massive dent to his 2022 WorldSBK title defence.

After retaining the lead into turn one Razgatlioglu led heading onto the back-straight ahead of Jonathan Rea.

But as has proven to be the case all weekend, Bautista’s top speed advantage brought him into contention on the back-straight before overtaking both Razgatlioglu and Rea on the approach to turn six.

Too eager to get straight back through, Razgatlioglu made an uncharacteristic mistake as he dove to the inside of Bautista while carrying way too much speed.

The Yamaha rider crashed in spectacular fashion as Rea came back through to lead due to Bautista having to momentarily take avoiding action.

Now in the lead, Rea had a great opportunity to try and break clear, however, Axel Bassani had different ideas as he took the lead on lap two.

Bautista, who was now fourth on the road, made light work of Iker Lecuona on lap four before closing in on Rea for second.

Shaping up for a move on Bassani, Rea was instead moved down to third as Bautista got great drive coming off turn seven.

With the chance to take another big step towards his first WorldSBK title in front of him, Bautista wasted no more time in going for the lead as he overtook Bassani along the back-straight with 14 laps remaining.

Rea followed Bautista through a few corners later with a very aggressive move on the young Italian, but after running wide a turn five on the ensuing lap, Bassani swiftly fought back and claimed P2.

As Bassani and Rea continued to battle hard and exchange positions, Bautista gradually opened up his advantage to the tune of three seconds.

Despite appearing to be slower than Rea for several laps, Bassani then steadied the ship and started lapping quicker than the six-time champion with ten laps to go.

Rea was not out of contention though, as the Kawasaki rider again found more pace during the final five laps before a move took place at turn one with three laps remaining.

With tyre degradation proving to be an issue for Bassani, the Motocorsa Ducati rider had no answer for Rea.

Out front, Bautista continued setting fastest lap after fastest lap en route to a comfortable race one victory.
